Personality
Yuanshi places the Chan Sect's prestige above fairness, promises, and even the safety of those he uses. He is deeply invested in proving that Chan Sect disciples—and particularly the Jade Void Twelve Immortals—are superior to the Jie Sect, frequently treating poor roots and Jie Sect's broad recruitment policy with contempt 70.
He favors capable disciples, especially Guangchengzi, and invests exceptional resources into their advancement. That protection is conditional: Huanglong Zhenren is severely punished after failure, while Guangchengzi is repeatedly supplied with treasures, healing resources, and forced breakthroughs despite the damage to his future potential 35 48 318.
His pride makes defeat difficult to accept. When challenged or humiliated by Lu Changsheng and Tongtian, Yuanshi repeatedly resorts to intimidation, broken agreements, covert assassination attempts, Spiritual Sense Clones, and Saint-level intervention against juniors 91 93 178 217.
Abilities & Skills
Saintly Might and Saint Methods
As a Heavenly Dao Saint, Yuanshi exerts overwhelming pressure on lower-realm cultivators and can suppress or injure them through raw Saint power.
- His passive aura nearly crushes Primordial Unity Golden Immortal Xuan Jun in Yu Xu Palace 21.
- He can summon disciples across distance, transport guests into Yu Xu Palace, and directly intervene in Saint-level conflicts 21 147.
- He can create Saint-powered talismans and grant temporary power beyond a disciple's natural realm 23 330.
Spiritual Sense Clones
Yuanshi uses Spiritual Sense Clones to act without openly appearing in person.
- His clone impersonates Qingxu Daode Zhenjun during the Blood Pool Competition, concealing Chan Sect interference until exposed 212 217.
- A second clone is concealed within Nanjixianweng as a contingency during the Lingjun Island trap 344.
- The destruction of a clone comparable to a Heavenly Dao Saint Third Heaven severely weakens his true body 345.
Deductions, Talismans, and Formations
Yuanshi employs deduction and prepared methods to identify enemies, conceal actions, and engineer advantages for Chan Sect disciples.
- His attempts to deduce Lu Changsheng's identity repeatedly fail due to the System's protection and Tongtian's interference 36 48.
- He creates offensive and defensive talismans for Huanglong Zhenren; one can kill a Primordial Unity Golden Immortal, while the other blocks an attack of that level 23.
- He uses the Heaven and Earth Cushion as the core of a spirit-gathering formation to accelerate Guangchengzi's forced advance to Quasi-Saint 284 318.
- He prepares the Five Elements Spirit Sealing Array for Guangchengzi during the Jie–Chan Dao discussion 81.
Artifact Refining
Yuanshi can refine powerful magic treasures from rare materials.
- He refines the Fantian Seal from a cliff fragment of Buzhou Mountain 237.
- The resulting seal is a Houtian Supreme Treasure, strengthened by both its Buzhou Mountain material and Yuanshi's Saint-level refinement 237.

Story Role / Major Arcs
Chan Sect–Demon Race Dispute
East Emperor Taiyi arrives at Kunlun Mountain seeking justice for Xuan Jun. Yuanshi initially dismisses the death of a Demon Race member, but agrees to summon Huanglong Zhenren after Taiyi invokes Nuwa's backing 21. He arms Huanglong for the subsequent duel, yet Huanglong's defeat damages Chan Sect's reputation and provokes Yuanshi's anger 23 35.
Jie–Chan Discuss Dao
Yuanshi accepts Tongtian's proposal for a sectarian Dao discussion, confident that the Jade Void Twelve Immortals will overwhelm the Jie Sect 33. To ensure victory, he personally pushes Guangchengzi to Zenith Heaven Golden Immortal, lends him the Central Wuji Apricot Yellow Banner, and prepares a formation talisman 48 68.
The plan fails when Lu Changsheng and the Jie Sect turn the contest around. Yuanshi attempts to interfere, later demands the return of the Central Wuji Apricot Yellow Banner, and threatens Lu Changsheng when the demand is refused 85 91.
Campaign Against Lu Changsheng
After the Dao discussion, Yuanshi sends Randeng to assassinate Lu Changsheng, promising Saint methods and providing the Town Heaven Coffin and a Yuqing Talisman 93. Randeng disappears, while Lu Changsheng later acquires the coffin, leaving Yuanshi unable to publicly prove the connection 113 304.
Yuanshi subsequently tries direct wagers and staged duels at Golden Ao Island. He loses Zhu Tian Qingyun to Lu Changsheng and refuses to honor his debt involving the Eight Treasures Glazed Bottle, triggering a Saint War with Tongtian at Kunlun Mountain 175 177.
Blood Pool and Buzhou Mountain
Yuanshi secretly enters the Blood Pool Competition through a Spiritual Sense Clone disguised as Qingxu Daode Zhenjun. The clone defeats several Ancestral Witches and nearly kills Yunxiao before Lu Changsheng intervenes 217 219.
After the Blood Pool conflict, Yuanshi seizes Buzhou Mountain fragments and refines the Fantian Seal. He also uses the Heaven and Earth Cushion and a Bodhi Seed to force Guangchengzi into the Quasi-Saint realm, curing the Zhan Luosha threat at the cost of stunting Guangchengzi's future progress 237 284 318.
Lingjun Island and the Western Sect Alliance
Yuanshi recruits the Western Two Saints to help capture Lu Changsheng, offering magic treasures and Chan Sect disciples as compensation 237 239. At Lingjun Island, Nanjixianweng receives Yuanshi's temporary Saint-level empowerment, while Yuanshi's clone hides within him as a final measure 337 344.
Lu Changsheng kills Nanjixianweng, destroys the clone with Tongtian's stored sword light, and takes both the Seven Treasures Wonderful Tree and Three Treasures Jade Ruyi 345. Yuanshi's attempt to conceal the failed operation is exposed before Tongtian and the Western Saints, turning the dispute into a four-Saint confrontation 349 351.
Defeat by Lu Changsheng
Yuanshi and Jieyin later ambush Lu Changsheng while Tongtian is prevented from leaving Golden Ao Island. Lu Changsheng seals Jieyin in the Town Heaven Coffin and confronts Yuanshi directly 412 413.
Yuanshi reveals Fourth Heaven Saint cultivation and burns his Saint foundation to temporarily reach Fifth Heaven, but still cannot break Lu Changsheng's Zhu Xian Sword Formation 413 420. Lu Changsheng shatters the Heaven and Earth Xuanhuang Exquisite Pagoda's defense, seizes the damaged pagoda, and leaves Yuanshi severely weakened 422 423.
Final Cooperation Against Lu Changsheng
Hongjun later orders Yuanshi to lend the Pangu Banner to Laozi for a battle against Lu Changsheng. Yuanshi complies reluctantly, hoping to reclaim the magic treasures previously lost to Lu Changsheng 459.
After the battle's aftermath, Yuanshi demands the Pangu Banner's return from Hongjun. Hongjun destroys Yuanshi's physical body for his presumption and warns that the banner can be bestowed or taken away at will 484.
