Background / History

Tongtian leads the Jie Sect from Biyou Palace on Golden Ao Island. When rumors spread that the sect is filled with incompetent disciples and inferior to the Chan Sect, he convenes his disciples to address the issue. Rather than accept Dingguang Xian's proposal to raise entry requirements, he adopts Yunxiao's recommendation and doubles cultivation resources for a thousand years. 2

He later expands this policy: disciples below the Golden Immortal realm receive double resources, rapid improvers may receive his personal guidance, and a future contest with the Chan Sect will determine whether the Jie Sect can overturn the rumors surrounding it. 19

Before Lu Changsheng's admission, Tongtian publicly recognizes only four personal disciples—Duobao, Jinling Shengmu, Wudang Shengmu, and Guiling Shengmu. He introduces a fifth personal-disciple position to drive the sect's disciples to compete for the Dao-discussion quota. 44

Personality

Tongtian is intensely proud of the Jie Sect and refuses to allow its disciples to be dismissed as inferior to the Chan Sect. He uses the Jie–Chan Dao discussion both as a practical test and as a public answer to the sect's detractors. His exchanges with Yuanshi are often sharply sarcastic, particularly when Chan Sect disciples fail to meet their leader's boasts. 19 33 77

As a master, he rewards genuine talent and stable cultivation rather than mere background. He recognizes Lu Changsheng's mastery of Shangqing Divine Thunder and unusually solid advancement, personally teaches him the route beyond Golden Immortal, and repeatedly provides treasures and protection. 61 63 94 153

Tongtian responds to the Jie Sect's poor reputation by increasing resources, promoting competition, and arranging a Dao discussion with the Chan Sect. He personally selects the twelve representatives and makes Lu Changsheng his fifth personal disciple after Lu's arena performance. 19 44 61

When Yuanshi attempts to intimidate Lu Changsheng following the Jie Sect's victory, Tongtian intervenes with Zhu Xian Jian and refuses to let a Saint suppress his disciple. 92
