Background / History

The Xuanxiao Zhang Clan was founded nearly four centuries before the events of Chapter 1 by a Late Golden Core sword cultivator. Its founder’s legacy shaped the family’s inheritance: roughly seventy percent of its techniques and spells are sword-related. The founder later died from severe injuries, while second-generation ancestor Zhang Chongxian remained the clan’s only Golden Core cultivator at the beginning of the story. 1

Despite its Golden Core status, the family began in a weak economic position. Its cultivators prioritized cultivation over commerce, affiliated families embezzled mining resources, and its population remained small: just over 300 cultivators, including one Golden Core and nineteen Foundation Establishment cultivators, supported by more than 800,000 mortals. 1

Under Zhang Xuanchen’s early management, the family established commercial and resource ventures including the Xuanxiao Merchant Guild, spirit-fish raising, spirit-plant cultivation, mining development, the Spirit Beast Garden, alchemy, talisman crafting, artifact refining, and spirit-wine production. These developing industries generated several hundred thousand Low-grade Spirit Stones annually. 1

Zhang Xuanchen succeeded Zhang Hongzhan as the clan’s sixth-generation Clan Leader in a formal ancestral-hall ceremony, receiving the Nine-Orifice Purple Gold Seal and the ancestral will’s recognition. 92

The Dark Hall relies largely on recruited Rogue Cultivators and spiritual-rooted children discovered in remote mortal settlements, while only several dozen Zhang clansmen coordinate its operations. Its network and embedded informants monitor approximately one hundred islands around the Penglai Islands and more than three hundred factions. 567
