Background & History
Konoha was founded by the First Hokage and Madara Uchiha. The Uchiha and Hyuga became two of its oldest clans, with the Hyuga joining shortly after the village's founding. Its political authority is exercised by the Hokage, though each Kage's appointment requires the Land of Fire daimyo's approval. 93 135
During Hiruzen Sarutobi's tenure as Third Hokage, Konoha maintained a ninja-centered social order. Children entered the Ninja Academy to learn chakra use and combat techniques, while the academy promoted the Will of Fire as its central ideal. Ninja received privileges and income but were expected to obey village orders absolutely; refusal could result in being labeled a rogue ninja. 1 3
The village's clan structure created marked disparities in training and status. Uchiha children had access to Sharingan-based techniques, Hyuga heirs learned the Byakugan and Gentle Fist, and Aburame members inherited insect-based secret arts, while commoner students often relied on the Academy for their first access to ninjutsu. 4
The Uchiha clan was massacred by Itachi Uchiha, leaving Sasuke as its only known survivor. The event caused widespread fear among Academy students and intensified doubts over Konoha's security. 12 Orochimaru later alleged that the Senju, Uzumaki, and Uchiha clans had all been destroyed during Hiruzen's rule, and that the Hyuga could face the same fate; these claims were presented during his attempt to undermine Zi Xu's faith in the village. 23
During the Chūnin Exams, Sound and Sunagakure forces infiltrated Konoha. Orochimaru, disguised as the Wind Shadow, took Hiruzen hostage and fought him inside the Four Violet Flames Formation. Hiruzen died during the attack, after which Konoha's senior ninja secured his body and began rebuilding. 56 57 60 62
Jiraiya later became the Fifth Hokage, with Tsunade handling village affairs during his frequent absences. 85 130 Under this administration, Konoha reinforced its perimeter patrols and sealing barriers, though its most visible economic changes were the emergence of gambling dens and “Red Romance” establishments. 128
Pain's Six Paths attacked Konoha in pursuit of the Nine-Tails jinchūriki. The defense squad was overwhelmed, and Pain's repulsive-force technique destroyed the village's central buildings before being interrupted. Reconstruction was still underway shortly before the Fourth Ninja World War. 202 205 208 210 217
