Background / History

Hyuga Branch Family

Rin was born into the Hyuga Branch Family and was raised under its restrictive etiquette and hierarchy. Before receiving the Caged Bird seal, she trained obsessively in Soft Fist, directing her resentment and refusal to submit into her practice. Other Branch Family members resented her temporary exemption from the seal, which she received because of her uncle's standing in the Main Family. 9

At the Academy, Rin introduced herself as someone whose hobby was training and whose ambition was to become a powerful female ninja. Her aloof expression initially made her seem unapproachable, but she proved considerate toward Yayoi and gradually became friends with him and Uchiha Yan. 3 4

Following her graduation, the Main Family forced the Caged Bird curse onto her. Rin viewed the mark and the Byakugan itself as a curse imposed on the Branch Family, but Yayoi offered to research a way to free her. 10 43 44

Partnership with Yayoi

Rin supported Yayoi's research and accepted his training in Chakra control, Hyuga techniques, and weapon use. Her precision allowed her to transform Soft Fist concepts into a distinctive sword style, leading Yayoi to forge weapons specifically for her. 30 31 32

Yayoi eventually removed Rin's Caged Bird through a procedure involving the Spirit Transformation Technique. Fearing that their arrangement would end after her liberation, Rin asked to remain useful to him; they formed a new contract to remain by one another's side rather than abandon each other. 63 64

Break with the Hyuga Clan

Rin grew strong enough to openly defy the Main Family. After her uncle, the Temple Person, died for her sake, she severed a Main Family elder's arm and rejected the idea that the Hyuga needed the Caged Bird to survive. 122 123

Her uncle's death left her devastated and removed her final emotional tie to the Hyuga compound. Yayoi took her away from the clan territory, and Rin chose to follow him wherever he went. 129 130
