Awakening and Martial Souls

Soul Masters begin their path through the annual Martial Soul Awakening ceremony, open to all six-year-old children regardless of wealth or status. An awakened Martial Soul alone is insufficient: a child without Soul Power cannot become a Soul Master. 1 2

Martial Souls manifest in many forms. Known examples include:

• Tool Martial Souls — such as scythes, hoes, rolling pins, shields, bows, scrolls, cauldrons, and abacuses. 2 107 109

A Martial Soul’s apparent quality does not fully determine its ceiling. Bufan Academy’s training demonstrates that precise Soul Power control, tactical understanding, and specialized cultivation can greatly improve the combat value of initially weak or unconventional Martial Souls. 125 127 141 142

Soul Power and Soul Rings

Soul Power is the internal energy a Soul Master mobilizes through their Martial Soul to influence the outside world. It is used to reinforce the body, generate elemental effects, support allies, or produce other Soul Skills. 118 125

Soul Rings are traditionally obtained by killing Soul Beasts. They grant Soul Skills and strengthen a Soul Master, but their absorption carries risks: a ring with excessive energy or an incompatible age can damage the user’s meridians, dantian, and spiritual state. 28 32 125

• A five-thousand-year Soul Beast can yield a purple Soul Ring. 31

• Higher-age Soul Rings contain stronger energy and Rule imprints, increasing both a Soul Master’s potential and the danger of absorption. 125

Soul Skills

Soul Skills are techniques activated through Soul Power and Martial Souls. Traditional practice treats them as fixed abilities granted by Soul Rings. 125

Bufan Academy instead teaches that Soul Skills can be understood as preset energy-output formulas: Soul Power is the input, the Martial Soul guides its transformation, and the resulting output produces a skill’s effect. 118 125

This approach allows practitioners to examine the internal flow of a skill, identify key energy nodes, and reduce waste. Xinghui improves his Star Pattern Enhancement from roughly a 30% to 40% strength increase while reducing Soul Power consumption by about 5%. 126

Martial Soul Avatar

Martial Soul Avatars are powerful manifestations used by advanced Soul Masters. Beast-type users may undergo visible physical transformation, while a seventh Soul Skill can also be identified as a Martial Soul Avatar. 2 402

Soul Master Disciplines

Soul Masters are commonly organized by combat role rather than merely by rank.

• Assault Department — front-line fighters focused on direct offense and physical pressure. 13 109

Revised Martial Soul Theory

Bufan Academy’s revised theory challenges the conventional belief that Soul Masters should merely cultivate, hunt Soul Beasts, and use fixed Soul Skills. It defines Martial Souls, Soul Power, Soul Rings, and Soul Skills through the concepts of energy and Rules. 118 125

The theory prioritizes efficient Soul Power circulation, precise control, and the possibility of optimizing or eventually creating new Soul Skills. It also argues that a Soul Master’s character, creativity, and understanding can matter as much as Innate Soul Power or Martial Soul quality. 116 125 129

Cooperative Combat

Although Soul Masters often fight individually, coordinated formations can allow weaker practitioners to challenge stronger opponents. Zhang Bufan develops simplified combined-attack systems based on fixed positions, footwork, rhythm, and synchronized Soul Power circulation. 265 266

• Three Talents Formation — a three-person formation built around coordinated positions and Soul Power links. 265 266

Society and Education

Soul Masters occupy an elevated social position, while ordinary people and those without Soul Power often have limited opportunities. Martial Soul Hall certifies Soul Masters and provides a monthly subsidy to recognized practitioners. 1 4 7

Traditional Soul Master education emphasizes rank, Soul Rings, Martial Soul quality, and combat specialization. Bufan Academy departs from this model by assessing applicants’ character, courage, honesty, and potential through illusion-based examinations rather than relying solely on Soul Power aptitude. 107 116
