Background
Dormant Statue and the Birth of Life-Slaying Bodhisattva
Guanyin's statue was among the deities cared for at Xunzhen Temple. Huang Huai knew the aging ceramic-painted statue well, though he worshipped Holy Lord Emperor Guan more frequently because he had personally invited Guan's statue to ward off calamity. 36
Despite receiving even more Incense and Fire Prayer Power than Holy Lord Emperor Guan's statue, Guanyin's statue initially could not manifest. Huang Huai eventually learned that Guan's manifestation had been enabled by over a decade of Huang Huai's prayers and spiritual essence becoming attached to the statue. 57
Huang Huai later attempted to consecrate Guanyin's statue using the Five Sacrificial Animals ritual. The ceremony instead produced a terrifying blood-red omen and formed the blood-robed Life-Slaying Bodhisattva. 89 90 When Guanyin later returned, she accepted this being as her thirty-fourth avatar, formally naming it Killing Life Guanyin. 298
Return and Divine Court
Huang Huai devoted most of his Heaven-Connecting Spirit Gathering Incense to Guanyin's statue. A final offering, accompanied by spiritual items and formal worship, allowed her True Spirit to condense and return. 295
She manifested clad in white, seated upon a lotus platform, carrying the Mutton-Fat Jade Bottle and forming a mudra. Her return brought visions of Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, celestial maidens, divine generals, golden lotuses, and falling heavenly flowers. 295
Huang Huai then opened a Divine Court in his Sea of Consciousness and welcomed Guanyin's statue into it. The resulting visions revealed multiple traditions and legends converging in her manifested True Spirit. 296 297
Nature and Origins
Guanyin's manifested True Spirit embodies the collective perception created by widespread worship and folklore. These perceptions include the Buddhist Great Compassionate Guanyin, the Daoist Cihang, and the legend of Princess Miaoshan's enlightenment. 296
She is revered across both Buddhist and Daoist traditions. Within Buddhism, she is described as one of the Western Three Sages and, in essence, an ancient Buddha despite her usual Bodhisattva status. 89 169 297
