Background / History
Demon Dao Struggle
Hongjun participated in the conflict against Demon Ancestor Luohu, gathering Qiankun, Yin Yang, and Yang Mei to bring the struggle to its climax. Although his allies were said to have fallen within the Immortal-Slaying Sword Formation, Hongjun survived and emerged as the ultimate victor. 31 32
Following the opening of Heaven and Earth, he recovered most fragments of the shattered Jade Disc of Creation and reforged it into a Chaos Spiritual Treasure. He refined the Heavenly Dao Merit acquired through the Demon Dao Struggle while cultivating in seclusion at Purple Firmament Palace. 27
Attainment of Sainthood and the Purple Firmament Teachings
Hongjun attained the Hunyuan Dao Fruit and declared himself the first Heavenly Dao Saint. He announced that, after three thousand years, he would preach the Dao at Purple Firmament Palace beyond the Thirty-three Heavens. 30
Before the sermon, Old Ancestor Yang Mei challenged him in the Chaos. Hongjun employed the Pangu Banner, Taiji Diagram, and Mountain River Society Diagram, but Yang Mei’s Space Great Dao overcame every treasure except the Jade Disc of Creation. Hongjun nevertheless invited Yang Mei to attend the coming sermon. 33
He held three preachings at Purple Firmament Palace, teaching the Hunyuan Great Dao, Heavenly Dao operation, karma, calamities, and the Path of Sainthood. During the later teachings, he accepted six disciples and bestowed Hongmeng Purple Qi upon them as a foundation for Heavenly Dao Sainthood. 69 102 108
Dao Integration and Conflict with the Pangu Orthodox Lineage
After the third preaching, Hongjun closed Purple Firmament Palace and began integrating with the Heavenly Dao. This bound him to the Primordial World's heavenly order but also restricted his ability to act freely. 108 151
When Xuanyuan and Tongtian became variables capable of challenging the Heavenly Dao's intended course, Hongjun manifested a phantom and ordered them to cripple their cultivation before accompanying him to Purple Firmament Palace. 145
His clone later fought Xuanyuan and Tongtian's Pangu True Body. Although it wielded the Heavenly Punishment Divine Spear and the Jade Disc of Creation, it could access only a fraction of the main body's Heavenly Dao power. The Pangu True Body ultimately shattered both the clone and its Jade Disc manifestation with power drawn from Buzhou Mountain's Earth Vein. 151
Appearance
Hongjun is an elderly Daoist whose bearing becomes increasingly inseparable from the Heavenly Dao after his integration.
- White hair, white eyebrows, and a white beard. 35
- Usually wears plain white Daoist robes. 35 458
- His aura is described as ancient, calm, and capable of merging into the surrounding Heavenly Dao. 108 458

Behind this restraint, he is highly controlling and politically calculating. He distributes inheritances, supports selected factions, and uses the Heavenly Dao's authority to preserve a balance favorable to himself. His assistance to the Western Teachings and his later plan to bind the Human Dao to the Heavenly Dao both serve this goal. 254 458
As the Earth Dao and Pangu Orthodox Lineage rise, Hongjun becomes increasingly wrathful and unstable. He reacts furiously to the loss of Heavenly Dao authority over the seasons, attempts to personally suppress the opposition, and later considers refining Venerable Yuanshi into a mindless Saint shell. 373 471
