Power Progression

Background and History

Yuanshi is one of the Four Pure Ones formed from Pangu's Primordial Spirit. He initially places great weight on innate foundations and looks down on his younger brothers Xuanyuan and Tongtian as deficient. Their later cultivation and treasures win his approval, though his pride in the Pangu Orthodox Lineage remains central to his character 23 144 155.

When Hongjun threatens Xuanyuan and Tongtian, Yuanshi pleads for their cultivation to be spared and offers to take responsibility for returning captured treasures. He then joins Laozi in resisting Hongjun's Purple Heaven Divine Thunder. Afterward, the brothers reconcile, and Yuanshi affirms their shared origin 146 147 155.

Xuanyuan warns Yuanshi and Laozi that using treasures of different origins to sever the Three Corpses makes their eventual unification extremely difficult. The two nevertheless choose to pursue Heavenly Dao Sainthood: they hope its authority will shield their brothers and allow them to observe Hongjun's plans from within 156 157. Yuanshi later establishes the Heavenly Origin Sect and becomes the Jade Pure Saint during the confrontation with Old Ancestor Five Elements 248.

Appearance

Yuanshi is described as refined-featured, with an indifferent, majestic expression. His dress varies by occasion 110 201 234 244.

• Wears a Jade Pure Dao robe at Jade Capital Mountain and a crane cloak on other appearances 110 244.
• Appears in a Nine Dragon Four Symbols Dao robe when visiting Phoenix Perch Mountain 234.
• His Jade Pure Qi can manifest as thirty-six layers of auspicious clouds 248.

Personality

Yuanshi is proud of his lineage and selective in whom he esteems. He can dismiss cultivators he considers poorly founded, and his views on origins differ sharply from Tongtian's willingness to teach without discrimination 65 144 467. His severity does not erase his loyalty: he risks Hongjun's anger to protect his younger brothers and stands his ground against Old Ancestor Five Elements while others shelter behind him 146 147 245.

He is also willing to plan against Hongjun. After learning the flaw in Severing Three Corpses, he and Laozi advise Queen Mother of the West to use treasures of the same origin, hoping she can complete that path and become an ally 168 169.

Pangu Banner

Yuanshi wields the Pangu Banner, an Innate Supreme Treasure renowned for offense 29 70.

• Releases Chaos-powered Heaven-Opening blades that tear through the void and drive back Innate Li Fire 202.
• Uses it against Hongjun's Purple Heaven Divine Thunder and to suppress Immeasurable Daoist alongside Houtu 147 203.
• Uses its world-splitting power to aid in deducing obscured Heavenly Secrets, though he and Laozi cannot penetrate the concealment at Jade Capital Mountain 110.

• Travels with Vertical Ground Golden Light, crossing from the Netherworld to the mortal realm in an instant 211.
