Background / History

Qing Xu Temple is a cultivation sect governed by Xuan Yuan Daoist, a Core Formation Realm cultivator. It is affiliated with the Heavenly Furnace Sect, which is described as its suzerain. Its outer disciples receive a cultivation method derived by Xuan Yuan from a fragmented copy of the Primal Dao Canon bestowed by the upper sect. 1 21

The temple regards Gui Xi Sect, located three hundred li east, as a possible revival of an ancient evil-cultivation lineage. Xuan Yuan calls its unknown cultivation methods and objectives a threat hanging over the Righteous Xuan Sects. 1

After three years as an outer disciple, Su Ling'er is summoned privately by Xuan Yuan and ordered to infiltrate Gui Xi Sect, join it as a disciple, investigate its methods, and secure evidence of evil cultivation. In return, he promises to accept her as a personal disciple, refine her meridians, rebuild her spiritual roots, provide cultivation resources, and help her pursue Foundation Establishment. 1

Organization and Practices

Hierarchy and discipline

Qing Xu Temple distinguishes sharply between outer, inner, direct, and personal disciples.

• Outer disciples perform chores such as chopping wood, carrying water, and sweeping leaves in exchange for their cultivation method and basic support. 1 27
• Inner and direct disciples receive greater access to cultivation resources; direct disciples may receive spiritual plants and pills directly from masters or elders. 42
• Sect conduct emphasizes composure, order, and restraint. Disciples are expected to walk steadily, avoid sword flight except in emergencies, and refrain from rooftop movement or other unruly conduct. 4
• Private fighting and killing between disciples are forbidden; even verbal behavior is regulated to preserve order. 17

Resources and cultivation access

For outer disciples with poor aptitude, Qing Xu Temple offers limited material support.

• Su Ling'er receives three spirit stones per month as an outer disciple. 1 5
• Low-grade spiritual plants such as Blood Condensing Grass are not ordinarily allocated to outer disciples, whom the sect considers poor investments. Inner disciples must still undertake potentially dangerous missions to obtain them. 42
• Facilities such as Meditation Stones are reserved for the sect master, elders, and personal disciples; the temple does not possess a Dao Seeking Ladder. 26
• Even when outer disciples possess spirit stones or contributions, they may remain unable to access the high-quality cultivation environments reserved for higher-ranked disciples. 21

Relationship with Gui Xi Sect

Qing Xu Temple suspects Gui Xi Sect of inheriting an ancient evil-cultivation lineage and considers its rapid rise, unusual methods, and unknown goals a danger to the Righteous Path. 1

Su Ling'er is tasked with gathering intelligence rather than openly confronting Gui Xi Sect. She is instructed to report through a communication jade slip; if that fails, she is to use a Spirit Contract Insect supplied by Xuan Yuan. 1

Intelligence Tools

• Communication jade slip — A specially prepared jade slip given to Su Ling'er by Xuan Yuan for covert contact with Qing Xu Temple. Its communication formation fails to extend beyond Gui Xi Sect. 47
• Spirit Contract Insect — A bronze bell-like insect gu containing a flying insect; intended as Su Ling'er's backup method for transmitting intelligence to the temple. 1 47

• Dao Seeking Ladder illusions — Su Ling'er confronts an illusory Xuan Yuan, who accuses her of betraying Qing Xu Temple by cultivating Gui Xi Sect's technique; she rejects the accusation and reaffirms that power itself is neither righteous nor evil. 28
• Attempted transmission — After accumulating resources and intelligence, Su Ling'er attempts to contact Qing Xu Temple. When the jade slip fails, she entrusts selected information to the Spirit Contract Insect and sends it toward the sect. 47
