Power Progression

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Legendary Wizard 216 Merlin entered the ranks of Legends in his twenties and regarded himself as unmatched among his generation.
Demigodhood 217 He claims to have advanced beyond ordinary Legends by creating and spreading the Knight Breathing Technique and intervening in conflicts between kingdoms. His Divine Decree can suppress a wizard's ability to cast magic.

Background / History

Merlin was born with the ability to communicate with animals and other living things, a talent he compares to that of a druid. As a child living near a monastery, he encountered the black Raven that would shape his life. 241

The Raven had killed the original Merlin, a figure favored by Destiny, then raised Merlin as a replacement. Raven subjected him to severe daily training in magic, alchemy, potions, swordsmanship, and physical conditioning until he became capable of creating the history associated with the name “Merlin.” 242 243

As an adult, Merlin became the Wizard King and made major contributions to the development of wizarding magic. Later generations benefited from the safer, more accessible spell systems he helped establish. 240 He also developed and disseminated the Knight Breathing Technique while pursuing a path beyond Legend. 217

In the modern era, Merlin conceals himself behind younger identities, including Rirym and Arthur King. He considers his existence dangerous, claiming that two Legends have already died because of the dangers connected to him. 237 240

Personality

Merlin is exceptionally proud of his magical accomplishments and initially considers himself far ahead of other Legendary Wizards. Ian's emergence as a child Legend shocks him into open disbelief, particularly because Ian can counter powers Merlin believed were absolute. 216 217

Despite his pride, Merlin is able to acknowledge defeat. After losing to Ian through unconventional magical tactics, he honors their agreement and attempts to guide Ian away from methods he considers excessively underhanded. 218

He is also deeply sensitive about his identity as the replacement Merlin. Ian's conclusion that Merlin's achievements are genuinely his own restores much of his confidence. 243 His restraint is inconsistent: he is capable of grave concern for others' safety, but also carries petty grudges for centuries and retaliates spectacularly when provoked. 238 240

Abilities & Skills

Legendary Magic and Demigod Authority

Merlin wields magic at the Legendary level and claims to have reached demigodhood through his personal magical path. 217

  • Can cast dozens of spells in rapid succession. 238
  • Uses golden flames capable of matching Ian's Fiendfyre. 217
  • Can render his body illusion-like, allowing Fiendfyre to pass through him harmlessly. 217
  • Manifested golden wings that became a corona and dispersed Ian's Avada Plague through magic-suppressing force. 217
  • His Divine Decree can suppress magic and attempt to strip a wizard of the right to cast. 217
  • Ian's Paradox Authority was able to resist and partially reflect this suppression. 217

Space Magic

Merlin can relocate himself and others through advanced spatial magic distinct from Apparition. 217

  • Transported himself and Ian from a burning forest to a desert battlefield using hand seals and incantations. 217
  • Casts some complex magic without a wand through hand-sign techniques. 217
  • His current condition limits how much complex magic he can safely use. 240

Prophecy and Reality Manipulation

Merlin possesses prophetic ability and uses it cautiously in dangerous environments. 220

  • Attempts to foresee threats and determine safe paths ahead. 220
  • His prophecy was restricted within Helheim and could not identify the correct route through Medivh's tomb. 220
  • His Nightmare bloodline allows him to confuse perception; with his ring, this power can approach alteration of reality. 244

Memory Magic

  • Pulled thread-like memories from his mind to bring Ian into scenes from his childhood. 240
  • His memory constructs preserve emotional impressions as well as visual events. 241
  • Used this magic to reveal Raven's training, the original Merlin's death, and the origin of his wand. 241 243

Communication with All Things

Merlin can naturally communicate with animals and Fantastic Beasts, a talent beyond ordinary linguistic magic. 241

  • Communicates with a wide range of creatures rather than a single species. 241
  • Has formed close bonds with creatures including Unicorns, Thunderbirds, Nifflers, and Bowtruckles. 243
  • His affinity with Fantastic Beasts allowed them to become trusted companions during his youth. 243

Alchemy and Magical Scholarship

Merlin is an accomplished alchemist and magical researcher whose knowledge exceeds Ian's in some fields. 216 233

  • Offered to teach Ian any magical knowledge in exchange for the shadow creature. 216
  • Raven trained him in alchemy and demanded that he reproduce powerful magical objects as part of his education. 241
  • Possesses knowledge of the Mirror of Erised that Ian cannot immediately match. 233
  • Helped lay foundations for spell systems that made magic safer and more teachable for later wizards. 240

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Raven-feather wand — Its core is a feather given to Merlin by Raven; it is stated to be more powerful than the Elder Wand. 243

  • Time-Turner — Given to Ian as part of the wager following their battle. 224

Relationships

  • Nicolas Flamel — Flamel joins Dumbledore in confronting Merlin and remains cautious even after verifying Merlin's sincerity. 239 240
  • Little Morgan — Met Ian and Merlin during their first confrontation; Merlin belonged to the political side opposing Morgan's family. 216
  • Fantastic Beasts — Merlin's companions since youth, drawn to his ability to communicate with all living things. 241 243

Story Role / Major Arcs

Challenge by Ian

Merlin appears while seeking the shadow creature called the Big Bad Wolf and offers magical instruction as payment. He accepts Ian's challenge, only to discover that his opponent is already a Legendary Wizard. 216

During their duel, Merlin counters Fiendfyre, Avada Plague, and Paradox Authority with golden flames, spatial magic, and Divine Decree. Ian ultimately defeats him by using disease-ridden rain to exploit Merlin's fear of contamination. 217 218

Medivh's Tomb

After conceding defeat, Merlin signs a contract with Ian to excavate the tomb of Medivh. He leads Ian and Little Morgan into Helheim, where his prophecy proves unreliable and he increasingly relies on Ian's judgment. 218 220

Merlin is alarmed when the tomb's guardian recognizes Ian as Medivh, then becomes hostile upon finding Raven's corpse within the tomb. 220 222

Raven Animagus Incident

When Ian transforms into a Raven Animagus, Merlin mistakes him for a child possessed by Raven's spirit and attacks him. Ian's Raven form proves immune to Merlin's spells and repeatedly pecks Merlin until he surrenders. 224

Merlin later identifies Ian as the True Creator and Shadow Raven, then receives further punishment from Ian after attacking him over the trauma caused by Raven's childhood training. 227

Hogwarts Exposure and Memory Revelation

Merlin returns to Hogwarts under a concealed identity but attempts revenge on Ian by flooding his dormitory with waste stored for more than a thousand years. Ian counters with a magical virus, leading to Merlin's humiliation and exposure as the Wizard King. 238 239

After clashing with Dumbledore, Flamel, and Ian, Merlin explains that knowledge of his existence can endanger others. Dumbledore accepts him as a student under conditions and uses Memory Charms to protect those involved. 240

Merlin then shows Ian his memories, revealing Raven's mentorship, the death of the original Merlin, and the Raven-feather core within his wand. 241 243 244
