Background / History

Death Eater Past and Family Connection

Snape once followed Voldemort as a Death Eater before becoming a double agent working for Dumbledore. His former allegiance remains a source of distrust: Hagrid openly considers him a dark wizard, while Lupin associates him with the deaths of his closest friends 9 119 168.

Through his mother, Snape descends from the Prince family, a withdrawn wizarding family known for its talent in potions. He is Ian Prince’s uncle; Dumbledore identifies him as the only family Ian has left 35 64 541.

Bringing Ian into the Wizarding World

Snape collects Ian from his orphanage and supervises his preparations for Hogwarts. Despite repeatedly mocking him, he pays for expensive supplies, including a brass cauldron and Hungarian Horntail dragon-hide gloves, rather than restricting purchases to the standard school list 9 11 12.

After shopping, Snape Apparates Ian to a secluded house in Hogsmeade and leaves him with a key and a Money Bag containing 150 Galleons. His generosity leads Ian to suspect that Snape feels indebted to his parents, although the reason is not disclosed 12 15 16.

Privately, Snape objects to Ian becoming involved in dangerous affairs. He reminds Dumbledore of their agreement that Ian should attend school, graduate, and live an ordinary life, then demands an Unbreakable Vow assuring him that Ian is not part of Dumbledore’s plans. Dumbledore instead challenges Snape’s attempt to determine the boy’s future and urges him to accept their family bond 16 35.

Ian’s Dark Magic and Sorting

When Snape discovers that Ian has learned the Inferi Control Charm, he refuses to believe the boy taught himself from a discarded note. To test that explanation, he writes out Sectumsempra and challenges Ian to learn it. Ian succeeds within minutes, forcing Snape to reconsider his judgment. Snape cleans up the house, orders secrecy, and expressly forbids Ian from using Sectumsempra on schoolmates 31 32 33 34.

Ian’s placement in Ravenclaw provokes another confrontation. Convinced that Ian’s ambition, cunning, willpower, and understanding of glory make him an obvious Slytherin, Snape threatens to dunk the Sorting Hat in a dung pit. He stops to hear its explanation that Ian’s attitude toward knowledge resembles Rowena Ravenclaw’s 52 54.

Later, Snape gives Ian his annotated copy of Advanced Potion-Making. He acknowledges the destruction of Ian’s family but refuses to name those responsible. Ian leaves certain that Snape is not his father and increasingly recognizes him as his remaining uncle 74.

Hogwarts Investigations

During the investigation into Ronnie Erich’s murder, Snape interrogates Marcus Flint with coercive methods and examines his memories. He and Dumbledore establish that Flint was manipulated into using Snape’s Sectumsempra to kill the Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher. Snape’s suspicion becomes so intense that he attempts to incapacitate Dumbledore, fearing an impersonator, only to be blasted against a wall 83.

When Ian kills Afrison Carrow with Fiendfyre, Snape arrives expecting that his nephew may have died. Finding Ian unharmed, he escorts him back to the Great Hall and prepares to intercede with Dumbledore. Dumbledore’s praise for Ian’s control, rather than condemnation, leaves Snape bewildered 86 87.

Snape later assists with the search for missing unicorns and reprimands Ian for pursuing Voldemort. He also confronts Quirrell, whose subsequent conversation with Voldemort reveals that they regard Snape as a threat to their plans 119 121 124.

Potion Research and the Time Loop

Snape discovers Ian brewing what appears to be Love Potion in bulk and supervises a further experiment that produces a deep-blue Vitality Potion. Alarmed, he destroys the unfinished materials, demands secrecy, and takes the completed potion away for testing 101.

His subsequent attempts to reproduce Ian’s Unlimited Firepower Potion fail, despite following the same procedure. A prophecy directs him to Morgan le Fay’s diary, which states that the potion cannot be replicated without the gods’ consent 103.

During Ian’s time-loop experiments, Snape repeatedly becomes the target of ingredient raids. Ian sometimes leaves Quirrell’s hair behind as false evidence; Snape retaliates against Quirrell and eventually moves his ingredients out of his office. Later, Snape agrees to help Ian manufacture counterfeit potion ingredients for sale in Knockturn Alley, splitting the proceeds. Around this time, he experiences painful fragments of memories of events he has never lived 133 134 139.

Forbidden Forest and the Bronze Door

On learning that Ian has entered the Forbidden Forest to challenge dragons, Snape immediately takes Hermione to search for him. Ian’s lingering Fiendfyre traces reveal a degree of power and control that surprises even Snape 270 273.

The forest becomes an Ancient Magic maze that defeats his attempts to escape by blasting and burning a path. Joined by Dumbledore, Snape witnesses alternate versions of the headmaster emerge from the Bronze Door. One invades his and Hermione’s minds, leaving Snape with lingering pain and a new understanding of the door’s danger 275 276 279 280 281.

Snape subsequently encounters Rirym and attempts to use Inverted Golden Bell on him. After being returned to Hogwarts, Snape is himself suspended upside down by a version of the spell that neither he nor Hermione can dispel. Hermione drags him to his office before students can discover him 289 290.

Still incapacitated, Snape teaches Hermione potions and arranges for her to impersonate him in class using Polyjuice Potion. His detailed lesson notes allow her to teach while concealing his condition 291 293 294.

Rewritten History

In the peaceful history Ian creates, Snape is present at the back of Slughorn’s Potions classroom. His expression remains impassive, but the oppressive gloom surrounding him is noticeably weaker 614.

Appearance

Personality

Snape is sarcastic, intimidating, and vindictive. His habitual insults compare students to trolls, fools, or vermin, and he frequently uses humiliation to enforce discipline. His hostility toward Gryffindor is especially pronounced, though Slytherin students are not exempt from his anger when they disappoint him 70 92 269 290.

His treatment of Ian exposes a strong protective attachment beneath that hostility. He provides money and equipment, fears finding Ian dead after dangerous encounters, and attempts to shield him from both punishment and Dumbledore’s schemes. Dumbledore regards this bond as a chance for Snape to stop isolating himself 16 35 86 137.

Professional pride makes him particularly sensitive to Ian’s impossible brewing results. He angrily inspects Ian’s hands after an exceptional examination potion, but still awards him an O. His teaching is abrasive rather than indiscriminately dismissive: Hermione likewise receives points for excellent work, despite rarely receiving praise 159 269.

Snape’s caution often becomes suspicion. He repeatedly questions whether Dumbledore is genuine and resents signs that the headmaster may not trust him. Nevertheless, when Ian needs rescuing from the Bronze Door, Snape accepts that Dumbledore offers the best chance of bringing him back 83 276 289.

His humiliation under Inverted Golden Bell reveals a more vulnerable side. Being trapped upside down recalls childhood trauma, briefly replacing his usual severity with fear before he erupts into rage 290.
