Background / History

A passage connecting the Abyss to the Douluo Continent appeared in the Endless Mountains roughly 6,300 years earlier. After Abyssal Creatures emerged, a devastating war ended with countless defenders sacrificing themselves to seal the Abyss Passage. The Four Great Organizations were subsequently established to guard it. 273

The Blood God Legion maintains the defense of the passage. Its Special Operations Department conducts reconnaissance, gathers data and specimens, and receives merit for identifying previously unknown Abyssal Creatures. 273 286

The Abyss repeatedly seeks to force open the passage. The Abyss Saint proposes sacrificing ten Abyss Kings to fully breach it, promising their eventual resurrection and an increase of three plane levels. 317 Later assaults include an attempt to descend through the Far North using an ancient array activated by the Demon Empress. 437

Characteristics

• Abyssal energy is destructive and suppresses the Martial Souls of Soul Masters within the real Abyss Passage; ordinary Martial Souls become nearly unusable without technological support. 273
• Abyssal Creatures are instinctively drawn to life energy and attempt to devour it. 287 439
• Defeated Abyssal Creatures' energy normally returns to the Abyss and can support their eventual resurrection. 409

Major Incursions

Abyss Passage assessment and first tide

Li Jinsheng and Na'er first encounter simulated Abyssal Creatures during their Blood God Legion assessment, including Ba'an and a Demon Enchantress. 272 285 After entering the real passage, they encounter Devour Lizards, Six-Clawed Demons, bats, and a level-three Abyss Tide. 287 288

During the tide, the Black Empress Clan emerges. These top-tier creatures are capable of passing through the passage due to their smaller size, and each member is stated to be no weaker than a human Titled Douluo. 289

Attempted breach by sacrificed kings

The Abyss Saint organizes a plan to sacrifice ten kings to open the passage. 317 The resulting abyssal energy is used in an assault, but Li Jinsheng's Rhapsody of Life Program destabilizes the Abyssal Creatures' evolution; he then absorbs the condensed energy and helps reinforce the seal. 323

Far North invasion

The Demon Empress activates an ancient array beneath the Far North, creating a purple-black pillar and allowing the Abyss to descend. Abyssal Creatures pour from the rift against the Northern Legion and Soul Masters. 437

The Federation counters with Anti-Abyss Shells, virus-filled rounds that dissolve Abyssal Creatures, and Bait Crystal Cores that lure life-hungry creatures before detonating inside them. 438 439 The Abyss later breaches the passage with a large swarm, including Abyssal Demon Bees. 441

The main force is temporarily repelled when an Ice Lotus freezes the Blood River God-Slaying Array and its Abyssal Creatures. The passage remains a continuing threat despite the Ice Plains being purified. 446

• Invisibility Vest — Mimics abyssal fluctuations to prevent detection through aura or spiritual power. 273 286

• Li Jinsheng's life aura makes him exceptionally conspicuous to Abyssal Creatures, which perceive him like a light source and swarm toward him. 287 289
• Li Jinsheng is able to absorb and purify abyssal energy without the usual harmful effects, preventing some defeated creatures' energy from returning to the Abyss. 287 289 292
• The Abyss Saint considers the growth of the Zetton Larva beneficial to the Abyss, despite its consumption of Abyssal Creatures, because it converts unknown energy into power. 409
