Background
Steve begins as a physically frail recruit at a U.S. military training camp during World War II. Despite his small build, he displays concern for fellow recruit Kyle and escorts him to Captain Brant after Kyle collapses from heatstroke 2.
Dr. Abraham Erskine considers Steve the ideal Super Soldier candidate because of his willpower and sense of justice. When Kyle is offered the experiment first, he declines and recommends Steve, believing the opportunity is more important to him 5 6. The serum transforms Steve into Captain America, though Hydra immediately steals and destroys the remaining sample, leaving Steve as the sole product of the original program 23.
Initially frustrated by his use in propaganda shows rather than combat, Steve longs to fight alongside Kyle on the front lines 9 20. He later leads soldiers in operations against Hydra, rescues captured American troops, attacks German factory bases, and becomes a celebrated wartime hero 33 37.
During the war's final Hydra operation, Steve joins Kyle in pursuing Red Skull and the Tesseract aboard a transport fighter 49. He eventually crashes a Hydra aircraft into an icy region of the Atlantic and remains frozen for decades 456.
Appearance
Before receiving the serum, Steve is a short, slender blond young man with a righteous but physically weak-looking face. The Super Soldier serum transforms him into a tall, powerfully built blond man; Kyle notes that Steve reaches roughly 188 cm, taller than himself 2 23.
- Originally weighed 95 pounds and stood five feet four inches before the experiment 261.
- After the serum, reportedly weighs 240 pounds and stands six feet two inches 261.
- Wears a blue combat suit marked with a silver five-pointed star and a dark-blue hood during WWII operations 33.
- Commonly carries a round shield bearing a star motif 456 614.
Personality
Steve is guided by patriotism, justice, and an instinct to protect others. Even when facing stronger or more ruthless opponents, he prioritizes civilian safety and refuses approaches that would needlessly endanger people 45 294.
He is highly resilient and refuses to surrender even after taking severe punishment in combat 35 288. His loyalty is especially evident in his treatment of Bucky Barnes: he risks his own standing to help Bucky escape, trusting his friend's claim of innocence despite public accusations 614.
Steve sometimes struggles with the gap between himself and Kyle. Having received both the Super Soldier opportunity and shield through Kyle, he wants to prove that Captain America can stand at the front and protect others rather than remain under Kyle's protection 36 45.
Abilities & Skills
Super Soldier Physiology
Steve possesses the “perfect physique” created by the Super Soldier serum, granting him exceptional strength, speed, durability, stamina, and recovery beyond normal human limits 23 45.
- Can strike heavy sandbags with enough force to violently swing them for extended periods 9.
- Retains enough endurance to continue fighting after being struck repeatedly by Bucky's mechanical arm 288.
- His physical resilience is not absolute; falls from great heights and heavy battlefield weapons remain potentially fatal threats 40.
- His body remains in peak condition after decades frozen in ice 262.
Shield Mastery
Steve uses his shield as both his primary defense and a ranged weapon.
- The shield is nearly indestructible and absorbs kinetic force through its Vibranium-based composition 33 35.
- He can throw it as a returning projectile, then catch it for follow-up shield strikes 35.
- His characteristic fighting style is to advance as a lone vanguard, defend allies with the shield, and strike from multiple angles 45.
- The shield can be damaged by weapons made from comparable Vibranium, as shown when Black Panther's claws leave shallow marks on it 614.
Combat and Leadership
Steve has strong battlefield instincts, over a dozen combat skills, and the charisma to rapidly gather soldiers under his command 33 45.
- Leads a 500-man offensive force targeting German new-energy weapon bases 34.
- Coordinates effectively with teammates during large-scale operations, including the Helicarrier engine repair with Caesar 437.
- Can fight aggressively in close quarters, but Kyle's broader combat repertoire and experience overwhelm him in their sparring match 35.
- Uses his shield and defensive instincts to compensate for opponents with superior firepower or physical modifications 288.
Infiltration and Deception
Steve is capable of covert operations despite his conspicuous public identity.
- Disguises himself as a Hydra soldier while infiltrating a WWII fortress 461.
- Successfully deceives a Hydra patrol by using its “Hail Hydra” password 461.
- Works with Ant-Man, Iron Man, and Caesar during a time-travel mission to retrieve the Tesseract 459 460 463.
Equipment
- Proto-Adamantium/Vibranium Shield — A unique, nearly indestructible round shield created by Howard Stark and given to Steve by Kyle 33.
- Captain America Combat Suit — A high-fiber blue suit with resistance to damage, dust, heat, and limited bulletproof capability 33.
- Modified Motorcycle — Equipped with cable-launching devices and rear flame weapons for evading Hydra pursuers 45.
- Transformer Mode vehicle — A yellow car developed by Tony Stark and Weiss that can transform into a giant combat robot; Steve pilots it during the Project Insight conflict 289.
- Mjolnir — Wielded by a future-timeline Steve during his mission to return the Aether to Asgard 484 485.
Relationships
- Kyle Karl — Fellow trainee, wartime brother-in-arms, and lifelong friend. Kyle gives Steve the Super Soldier opportunity and Adamantium Shield; Steve later places exceptional faith in Kyle's ability to protect the future 6 23 33 486.
- Peggy Carter — Allied agent and close wartime companion. She supports Steve during his frustration over being kept from combat and later helps coordinate his missions 9 25.
- Bucky Barnes / Winter Soldier — Steve's closest wartime comrade. Steve refuses to abandon Bucky after Hydra brainwashing, repeatedly trying to reach him and later aiding his escape 25 278 614.
- Natasha Romanoff / Black Widow — Avenger teammate and investigative partner during the exposure of Hydra within S.H.I.E.L.D. 278 288 429.
- Sam Wilson / Falcon — Avenger teammate who supports Steve during the Helicarrier crisis and the pursuit of Bucky 284 294 614.
- Tony Stark / Iron Man — Fellow Avenger and technological ally; Tony participates with Steve in multiple time-travel operations 455 459 463.
- Caesar Karr — Kyle's clone and Steve's ally in both the Battle of New York and the time-travel missions involving the Infinity Stones 437 455 459.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Return from the Ice
Steve awakens in the modern era after decades frozen, retaining his memories but struggling to process the changed world 258. He reunites with Kyle, visits memorial exhibits recounting their World War II legacy, and helps subdue robbers at a war memorial hall 261 262.
Project Insight and the Winter Soldier
Steve and Natasha investigate an abandoned military base and uncover Hydra's long-term infiltration of S.H.I.E.L.D. The discovery that Bucky has served as Hydra's Winter Soldier devastates Steve, who sees Bucky's condition as a consequence of their wartime history 278.
During the Helicarrier conflict, Steve fights Bucky without his shield, refuses to retreat despite heavy injuries, and ultimately relies on Weiss's assistance to continue the mission 288 289. After Project Insight is destroyed, he returns alone and dejected following his confrontation with Bucky 290 302.
Avenger Operations
Steve serves as a core permanent Avenger alongside Tony Stark, Natasha Romanoff, Clint Barton, and Sam Wilson 612. During Loki's attack on New York, he works with Caesar to restart a damaged Helicarrier engine vortex while holding off mind-controlled agents 429 437.
Bucky's Exoneration
When Bucky is accused of assassinating Wakanda's king, Steve helps him evade U.S. special forces despite knowing it may damage his own reputation. He clashes with T'Challa but continues to insist on discovering the truth 614.
Kyle later assures Steve and Bucky that Bucky's brainwashing can be cured through available powers and advanced technology, giving Steve renewed hope for his friend 618.
Future Timeline Missions
A future Steve travels to 2012 in search of Infinity Stones, only to be mistaken for Loki and defeated by his younger counterpart 455 456. He then travels to 1944 with Tony, Scott Lang, and Caesar, infiltrates a Hydra fortress, and helps retrieve the Tesseract 459 461 463.
The same future version later returns the Aether to Asgard and confides in Kyle that his timeline suffered a catastrophic defeat. Despite this, he tells Kyle that he believes in him more than he believes in himself 484 486.
Notable Quotes
“I haven't surrendered yet! I can fight like this for another day!” 35
