Beside them lay the corpses of two Space Marines, one from the Great White Shark Chapter and one from the Minotaurs Chapter.
Manros, Chief Librarian of the Fierce Angels, crouched beside the bodies and used his psychic powers to read their memories.
The Great White Shark's corpse had been sent over by Kao.
The Minotaur's corpse had been teleported down by the Savage Fangs at Kampa's order.
Lu Jin already knew that the Great White Shark and Minotaurs had inexplicably appeared in the star system aboard a Cruiser.
But he wanted to know why.
"This is a miracle."
An instrument extended from Caul's augmented body. It bore no markings of the Adeptus Mechanicus or the Imperium, and its style was highly advanced—clearly an ancient device.
"Before the Warp storms that interrupted the development of the Human Species ravaged the galaxy, there were already signs of what was to come."

Caul's words concerned the calamity that had befallen the Human Species at the height of its power, before the Great Crusade.
Back then, the first cry of Slaanesh's awakening unleashed storms throughout the Warp. The storms disrupted Warp travel, isolating the human colonies from one another and causing technology to regress.
Lu Jin turned his gaze from Manros to Caul. "And did the device work?"
"No." Caul examined the information. "It couldn't enable ships to travel normally at the time."
After a pause, Caul added, "But Warp storms of that magnitude will never happen
