Background

The Fierce Angels were founded during the Twenty-First Founding. Their first Chapter Master was Lelid, and the newly formed Chapter was deployed to the Armageddon war zone, where it fought for a century. 114

Their gene-seed originated through a “cursed founding.” The Chapter publicly traces its lineage to Roboute Guilliman and the Ultramarines, while its gene-seed is suspected to be a fusion of Guilliman’s and Angron’s genetic legacies. 5

The Chapter’s early losses and lack of resources shaped its bond with ordinary people. After mortals funded a warship and volunteered as crew following one costly campaign, the Fierce Angels developed a lasting tradition of valuing and protecting mortals. 20

When Lu Jin first encountered them, the Chapter numbered only twenty-one Space Marines and possessed a single strike cruiser, the Ragefang. 5 116 The Chapter later suffered catastrophic losses after being wrongfully accused and lured into battle against true traitors, leaving only seven of the original veterans alive by the time it began rebuilding. 52 56 116

The Fierce Angels do not define honor by victory or the thrill of combat. Their first Chapter Master taught that a battle is honorable only if it changes the fate of those being protected; a lost battle can be glorious if it saves lives, while a victorious but meaningless battle is disgraceful. 20

Their recruitment process emphasizes compassion, courage, and self-sacrifice over physical ability. Candidates who defend others may be accepted without further testing, while talented but selfish candidates are rejected. 20

Breaker of Formations

The Chapter’s codex assigns the role of Breaker of Formations to a warrior who occupies the center of an assault, pierces enemy defenses, and creates an opening for the rest of the force. Lu Jin was assigned this role during the assault on the Botulism warband. 22

Story Role and Major Arcs

Recruitment of Lu Jin

The Fierce Angels brought Lu Jin aboard the Ragefang after he killed thirty weakened Greenskins during their recruitment trial. Chapter Master Ninos offered him a place in the Chapter, but Lu Jin initially resisted augmentation because he feared losing his sense of self. 5

Capture by the Cunning Hounds

The Chapter was captured by the Cunning Hounds, who subjected Ninos to a transformation ritual while the surviving Fierce Angels were imprisoned in iron cages. Lu Jin infiltrated the enemy vessel, defeated the Cunning Hounds’ leader, and rescued the Chapter. Ninos subsequently recognized him as a battle-brother. 16

Loss of Ninos and Lu Jin's Ascension

After Ninos’s death, his lingering psychic power continued to protect the Chapter. Lu Jin was promoted to Chapter Master and led the Fierce Angels in their first major battle under his command against the Botulism warband. 22

Manros and the Cleansing War

On Manros, the Fierce Angels fought the Mercy Emissaries and uncovered the world’s slave society. Sixteen Fierce Angels annihilated one hundred Mercy Emissaries without suffering casualties, using Lu Jin’s assault as the centerpiece of their close-combat breakthrough. 32

The Chapter later forced the Imperium to acknowledge that it had been wrongfully accused, even though the wider Imperium continued to treat it as a dangerous and suspect force. 52 55

Rebuilding the Chapter

After Manros, the Fierce Angels used an automatic augmentation device to rebuild their depleted ranks. Their force expanded from seven veterans and ten recruits into a growing Legion supported by warships, industrial vessels, mortal auxiliaries, and new Space Marine companies. 56 116 128

Hera Campaign

The Fierce Angels entered the Hera system through the Webway and stopped the Great White Sharks from abducting young men for lethal recruitment trials. They seized the Great White Sharks’ ships and defeated their Chapter Master, demonstrating the Legion’s new military strength. 129

When roughly 6,000 Red Corsairs arrived in pursuit of the Great White Sharks and Minotaurs, the Fierce Angels held the enemy back to allow the Navigation Tower and civilians to be evacuated. 132
