Background / History
Origins and early rule
The current Heavenly Court arose after the Ancient Demon Race Heavenly Court collapsed during the Demon-Witch War. It subsequently banned the circulation of records concerning its predecessor, apparently seeking recognition as the legitimate successor to that earlier regime 135.
Following the Third Heaven and Earth Cataclysm, the Heavenly Court decreed that gods and beings above the God Realm could not enter the Eastern Continent 67. After the First Cataclysm, it also began extensively collecting Magic Treasures and resources from the world, leaving the lower realms comparatively impoverished while the Heavenly Court accumulated great wealth 187.
Decline and hidden agenda
The Court presents itself as an immortal celestial order, but its gods are subject to aging and lifespan limits. To extend their existence, they devour Source—the life-origin of living beings—and force mutations upon their bodies in attempts to surpass their physical limits 281.
The Book Sage, formerly a Heavenly Court official, discovered signs of this corruption while serving there: blood-like odors, unnatural bodily changes among deities, and persistent whispers that harmed his mind 282. The Court eventually treated entire worlds as stable Source suppliers and planned to refine worlds during Heaven and Earth Cataclysms, killing their inhabitants for harvested Source 282.
Headquarters and Infrastructure
- Lingxiao Treasure Hall — The central assembly hall of the gods, presided over by the Jade Emperor 186 414.
- Southern Heavenly Gate — A major gateway from which Yang Jian observes and departs for military operations 414.
- Military Hall — A tightly guarded core facility containing military maps, documents, and offensive plans 364.
- Qingyun Supervision Hall — A monitoring facility containing large light screens used for supervision 269.
- Heavenly Gates and world barriers — Entrances to Court-controlled worlds, reinforced with complex runes and laws originating from the Three Poisons Realm 333.
Control Mechanisms
Source harvesting
The Heavenly Court harvests Source to sustain its members' longevity and continued rule. It regards worlds under its control as resource banks, with lifeforms of greater potential or those undergoing breakthroughs providing greater quantities of Source 281 282.
- Heaven and Earth Cataclysms create periods when living beings more readily break through physical limits and therefore possess greater Source 282.
- The Court uses specially controlled worlds as continuous suppliers outside Cataclysm periods 282.
- The Qingyun Field was revealed to be a man-made Secret Realm where demonic beasts absorbed life energy into an underground formation connected to the Heavenly Court's scheme 268.
- The Court collaborated with the Demon Race's invasion of the Profound Yellow Great World as part of a wider harvesting operation 302.
World barriers and Marks
The Heavenly Court prevents controlled worlds from leaving its jurisdiction through sealed world barriers. The Book Sage confirms that no one may leave such a world without the Court's permission 280.
- Its barriers are built from dense, foreign runes and laws rather than simple energy constructs 333.
- The Court can grant cultivators artificial Marks that allow the use of Spiritual Energy, spells, and Divine Abilities in worlds where such cultivation would otherwise be impossible 300.
- Removing a Mark causes the recipient's cultivation to disappear, reducing them to an ordinary person 300.
- The Court uses these systems to suppress the emergence of Great Emperors and preserve its dominance over dependent worlds 319.
- Ye Jing eventually deciphered the Laws of the Three Poisons Realm and cracked one such barrier, beginning the collapse of the Court's blockade in that world 333.
Corruption and bizarre mutations
The Court's pursuit of longevity resulted in widespread corruption among its personnel. Heavenly Soldiers and Generals can transform into grotesque monsters with tentacles, black fluid, insects, and unnatural eyes when their condition is exposed 310.
- Holy light from above can temporarily suppress the soldiers' transformations and restore their outward appearance 310.
- The Four Heavenly Kings themselves were described by the Human Saint as corrupted and weaker than they had once been 309.
- The evil thoughts expelled by corrupted deities accumulated into bizarre creatures and contributed to the emergence of the Evil God and its forces 302.
- The Court later made deals with the Evil Gods after failing to contain the consequences of its corruption 328.
Military Forces
- Heavenly Soldiers and Heavenly Generals — The Court's rank-and-file army; many behave mechanically and focus solely on assigned duties 364.
- Four Heavenly Kings — Celestial commanders dispatched to apprehend the Human Saint at Dragon Cauldron Mountain 309.
- Gods of War — Includes Yang Jian, Nezha, the True Martial Great Emperor, Thunder God, and Rain Master 414.
- Resurrected forces — The Court deployed Heavenly Court and Demon Race soldiers resurrected for war during its assault on the Profound Yellow Great World 381.
- Hidden combat power — A secret offensive draft found in the Military Hall indicated that the Court possessed concealed forces amounting to nearly half of its openly displayed strength 364.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Demon Extermination Alliance negotiations
When the Demon Race invaded the Eastern Continent, the Heavenly Court offered support while imposing conditions favorable to itself. It demanded priority over battlefield spoils and demon corpses, while leaving the dangerous task of subjugating the Demon Abyss to the mortal forces 165.
Taibai Jinxing later offered to remove the Heaven and Earth restrictions early, enabling the Taixu Profound Realm to enter the Profound Yellow Great World. The Court supported the formation of Ye Shitian's Demon Extermination Alliance, though its actions were increasingly viewed as manipulative and self-serving 161.
Recruitment of Ye Jing
The Jade Emperor discussed recruiting Ye Jing into the demon-extermination army after learning of his achievements. Ye Shitian supported this proposal in hopes of forcing Ye Jing into danger, without the Jade Emperor knowing Ye Jing's full background 186.
The Court also sought Ye Jing through its surveillance network, with Thousand-Mile Eye and Wind-Following Ear summoned to assist in locating him 187.
Exposure at Dragon Cauldron Mountain
At the Heavenly Origin Festival, the Heavenly Court dispatched the Four Heavenly Kings and numerous soldiers to apprehend the Human Saint 309. The Human Saint exposed the soldiers' monstrous forms and used the Book Sage's records to reveal the Court's Source-harvesting practices to the public 310.
The exposure destroyed much of the Court's moral authority among the gathered cultivators and prompted public calls to overthrow it 310. Yang Jian responded by declaring that the Heavenly Court would begin a world purification within one month, sparing only those who surrendered 311.
War against the resistance
The Court launched a direct offensive against the human-led alliance, led by Yang Jian, Nezha, the True Martial Great Emperor, and other high-level gods. The first assault was repelled, though the resistance suspected it had been only a probe of their strength 363 364.
Ye Jing infiltrated the Heavenly Court disguised as a Heavenly Soldier and uncovered evidence of its hidden reserves in the Military Hall 364. The Court later deployed one hundred thousand Heavenly Soldiers and Generals against the Profound Yellow Great World, including resurrected forces 381.
During the battle for Town Heaven Pass, the Court exploited the Evil God's assault and sent its Gods of War to attack the defenders simultaneously, placing both the resistance and the Evil God's soldiers under pressure 414.
