Background / History
Primordial Heavenly Venerate intervened when Haotian publicly defied the Sages at the Heavenly Emperor's banquet. Offended by Haotian's refusal to show deference, he treated the dispute as an affront to Sage dignity. 1
He escalated the conflict by attempting to kill Haotian and replace him with a more obedient Heavenly Emperor. Dao Ancestor Hongjun dispersed his manifested giant hand before it could strike, forcing Primordial Heavenly Venerate and the other Sages to withdraw. 3
After witnessing Haotian's refinement of tens of thousands of formation bottles, Primordial Heavenly Venerate became convinced that Haotian possessed an artifact-refining method unavailable even to the Three Pure Ones. His resentment toward Haotian deepened. 8
When Haotian later abdicated, Primordial Heavenly Venerate discovered that finding a replacement willing and able to bear the Heavenly Emperor position was far more difficult than expected. Zhenyuanzi refused his invitation, and Hongjun ultimately compelled him to invite Haotian back. 57 58 61
He later began arranging the Measure Calamity to clear the Chan Teachings' karma. To draw Haotian into the calamity, he loosened the seal on Lingxiao Palace's pillar, manipulated Yaoji's return to the Heavenly Court, and influenced Old Man Yuehe to extend the Marriage Thread. 121 122
Following Haotian's attainment of the Hunyuan path, Primordial Heavenly Venerate repeatedly sought ways to restrain him, but Hongjun barred him from entering the Primordial World and intervening directly on behalf of the Chan Teachings. 165 170
Personality
Primordial Heavenly Venerate is stern, status-conscious, and quick to interpret resistance as an insult to Sage authority. Haotian's public defiance provoked him into attempting a fatal attack rather than accepting a loss of face. 1 3
He is calculating when his sect's interests are at stake. He sought a compliant replacement for Haotian, pushed to advance the Measure Calamity for his disciples' benefit, and manipulated Yaoji and Yuehe indirectly rather than revealing his hand. 3 102 121
His pride is tempered by practical concerns when events turn against him. Though he initially forced Haotian away, he later had to negotiate for Haotian's return and offer the Hunyuan Box as compensation. 61 63
