Background

Zhunti is one of the Two Sages of the West alongside his senior brother Jieyin. Their Western Teachings are burdened by a need to repay Heavenly Dao merit, making the restoration of the barren Western Region and the growth of their sect central to Zhunti's plans. He is willing to bear reputational damage and make costly concessions when he judges them necessary for the sect's survival. 3 8 69

At Haotian's banquet, Haotian publicly implicates Zhunti and Jieyin in Hongyun's death. Zhenyuanzi accepts the accusation as credible enough to hold a grudge against them; Zhunti and Jieyin consider silencing him, but abandon the idea because attacking Wuzhuang Temple would damage earth veins extending into the West and incur ruinous Karma. 2 3

Zhunti quickly recognizes that Dao Ancestor Hongjun will not tolerate a direct attack on Haotian that undermines Hongjun's authority. Nevertheless, he repeatedly seeks ways to profit from Haotian's reforms, including considering the adoption of Haotian's Merit-gathering methods in the West despite the resulting Karma owed to the Heavenly Emperor. 7 8

Personality

Zhunti is ambitious, observant, and intensely pragmatic. He weighs political risk before acting, such as refusing to provoke Zhenyuanzi when the karmic cost would threaten the West, and recognizing Hongjun's protection of Haotian as a hard limit. 3 8

He is more impatient and emotionally reactive than Jieyin, frequently responding to setbacks with envy, anger, or urgency. Jieyin commonly restrains him by emphasizing long-term fortune, Karmic Debt, and the dangers of overreaching. 7 10 112 139

Zhunti is also adept at manipulating public opinion and exploiting another faction's disadvantage. He exposes the Three Pure Ones' attempt to monopolize Merit from aiding the Human Emperor, then withdraws from the contest in a manner that improves the Western Teachings' reputation. 78 79

Zhunti initially seeks to imitate Haotian's Northern Region project by converting the West's Sha Qi into spiritual liquid and gathering Merit. He ultimately recognizes that “borrowing” Haotian's method would leave the Western Teachings with a debt they cannot easily settle. 7 8

Underworld Intervention

Zhunti and Jieyin dispatch Ksitigarbha to probe the Underworld, assess Empress Pingxin's stance, and determine whether it can become a source of Merit for their disciples. Zhunti endorses Ksitigarbha as the best candidate because of his wisdom, perseverance, and compassion. 17

Contest for Human Emperor Merit

When the Four Teachings mobilize around Fuxi, Zhunti intervenes after the Three Pure Ones attempt to exclude the Western Teachings. He reframes their exclusion as an attempt to monopolize Merit and forces the Three Teachings into an unfavorable public position. 76 78 79

Measure Calamity Schemes

Zhunti and Jieyin interfere with Primordial Heavenly Venerate's plan involving Yaoji, then work to accelerate the Shang Dynasty's decline. Zhunti proposes engineering Dixin's offense against Nuwa so that her retaliation will weaken Shang fortune. 122 139 140

During the conflict at Western Qi, Zhunti exploits Primordial Heavenly Venerate's desperation, exchanging the Two Sages' assistance against the Immortal Slaying Sword Formation for two Karmas. 147 148

Establishment of the Buddhist Gate

After the Measure Calamity, Zhunti and Jieyin lead the Western Teachings out of the Mystic Gate and establish the Buddhist Gate. Zhunti adopts the title Zhunti Buddha Mother as Mystic Gate fortune flows into their newly founded sect. 156

He subsequently pursues the Buddhist Gate's eastward propagation, accepting a Karmic obligation to Taishang in return for the Human Teachings' consent. 157 163

Conflict with Haotian and Defeat

Zhunti and Jieyin conclude that Haotian can be challenged in Chaos, where they expect his Merit-based advantage to be less decisive. They plan to use the Immortal Slaying Sword Formation against him when an opening appears. 177 178

The plan fails. Haotian's Imperial Dao Law suppresses their ability to circulate mana and laws; their combined defense through the Bodhi Tree cannot stop his amplified Immortal Slaying Sword Qi.
