Background / History

Konan was born in Amegakure to an impoverished civilian family with no ninja background. Before the war devastated her home, she sold handmade paper flowers beneath a small rain shelter in the village. Gojo Yoru encountered her there, recognized her talent, bought a paper flower, and deliberately avoided prolonged contact to keep attention away from her. 42 43

After Amegakure was attacked, Konan lost both parents and fled the village alone. Gojo found her shivering in the rain and, relating to her as a fellow orphan, offered to let her remain at his side. Though they had met only twice, she accepted because she felt secure with him. 64

Gojo secretly housed, supported, and trained Konan, supplying her with regular meals, books, a training regimen, and instruction in chakra refinement, ninja fundamentals, medical ninjutsu, genjutsu, fuinjutsu, and the Five Element transformations. His visits and her identity were concealed; he regarded her as a secret trump card. 79 88 94

After Gojo’s second evolution, he sent Konan back to the Land of Rain with a specific assignment: locate the unawakened Rinnegan wielder Nagato and cultivate him into her subordinate. She found Nagato soon after his parents’ deaths, fed him, gave him shelter, and accepted him as her “temporary subordinate” on the condition that he train to become a ninja. 94 96

Konan and Nagato later worked as bounty hunters. Their life-and-death work accelerated both of their growth, while Konan maintained the public role of Nagato’s mentor and “Konan-sama.” 101 120

When Yahiko approached them with knowledge of the Rinnegan and overwhelming Wood Release power, Konan initially ordered Nagato to kill him. She eventually agreed to cooperate with Yahiko while remaining suspicious that an unknown mastermind stood behind him. 121 122 123

Konan later entered Konoha with Yahiko and Nagato under the disguise of a Kusa ninja team during the Chunin Exams. Her stated goal was to obtain Konoha’s Mutual Explosion Tag Technique, which she considered ideally suited to her Paper Release. 125 126

Konan initially appears as a small child with short, straight blue-violet hair and amber eyes, selling paper flowers in Amegakure’s perpetual rain. 42 By age thirteen, disciplined training and regular nutrition have made her notably taller and more mature. 120

Konan is initially innocent, naive, and hopeful despite Amegakure’s harsh environment. Her orphanhood leaves her especially responsive to safety, care, and sincere kindness; Gojo’s support becomes the foundation of her loyalty to him. 42 64 79

Under Gojo’s guidance, she becomes disciplined, self-reliant, and increasingly composed. She follows a strict routine of nutrition, reading, sleep, and training, and develops an aloof outward bearing that contrasts with her more lively private emotions. 88 110 120

She remains compassionate toward war orphans, particularly Nagato, in whom she sees her former self. However, her loyalty to Gojo takes priority over other concerns; when Yahiko appears to threaten Gojo’s plans, her immediate response is to order Nagato to kill him. 96 121 122

Konan is highly protective of Nagato but also strategically pragmatic. She is willing to retreat and cover his escape when necessary, recognizing that her aerial mobility gives her superior survivability. 122
