Background and History

Danzō was a disciple of the Second Hokage and a longtime friend and political counterpart of Hiruzen Sarutobi. He became known as Konoha's “Darkness of Ninjutsu,” operating through Root while Hiruzen represented the village publicly. Reports in the Ninja World credit the pair's complementary leadership with helping Konoha become the strongest ninja village of its era. 151 153 275

He considers Hiruzen his lifelong rival and repeatedly frames himself as the figure willing to make decisions Konoha's public leadership cannot make. 134 278 740

Appearance

Danzō is an elderly man who habitually carries a cane and presents himself with rigid, formal composure.

  • His right eye and, at times, much of his body are covered in bandages. 275 587
  • He has been seen in a gray kimono and later in a Navy cloak of justice. 275 740
  • Even when imprisoned or injured, he keeps his hands behind his back and maintains an imposing posture. 152 212
  • By his retirement, he refers to himself as seventy years old. 783

Personality

Danzō is proud, severe, and intensely competitive. He defines himself through the role of Konoha's darkness, rejects being underestimated, and treats humiliation—particularly at Kusagakure's hands—as a debt to be repaid. 159 212 571

He is also highly suspicious. During the Grass–Rain conflict, he noticed inconsistencies in the supposed alliance, used Root's covert signals to order an investigation, and attempted to flee once he concluded that the situation was a scam. 121 123

His dedication to Konoha is genuine but expressed through ruthless pragmatism. He refused recruitment while captive, insisting he would not betray Konoha, yet he repeatedly clashes with Hiruzen and the elders over actions he considers necessary for Konoha's recovery, finances, and independence. 210 275 309

Danzō has a pronounced fear of financial weakness. His attempts to secure funds for Root, industry, and village recovery repeatedly drive his decisions, even when they create diplomatic crises. 181 301 331

Abilities & Skills

Intelligence and Counterintelligence

Danzō commands Root's covert intelligence network and is adept at extracting conclusions from limited evidence.

  • Used Root's secret signals to order an investigation into irregularities in Amegakure. 121
  • Detected suspicious links between Kusagakure and Amegakure before Konoha's other leaders understood the situation. 150
  • Conducted detailed investigations into Grass Ninja Manufacturing's market reach and its effects on the Five Great Nations. 275
  • Sought authorization to purge suspected spies from Navy Headquarters after joining the World Government. 707

Political, Economic, and Psychological Warfare

Danzō uses commerce, propaganda, and public perception as weapons alongside conventional military planning.

  • Presented Konoha executives with the Prosperity and Village Rescue Plan, promising to restore Konoha within three years. 274
  • Founded the Root Daily and reassigned Root operatives as reporters to discredit Kusagakure. 309

  • Used revived Fourth Hokage Minato and Fourth Kazekage Rasa as psychological weapons during the war against the Land of Grass. 589

Command and Oratory

Danzō can coordinate large forces and persuade factions with incompatible interests to act together.

  • Convened the Four Kage to challenge Grass Ninja Manufacturing's monopoly and seize its market share. 434

Limitations

  • Danzō cannot use Space-Time Ninjutsu. 124
  • He recognizes that his personal combat strength falls short of figures such as Hiruzen and Hanzō, and regrets lacking sufficient power to withdraw safely from dangerous confrontations. 125
  • His fixation on defeating the Grass Ninja Village Leader repeatedly compromises otherwise careful plans. 740 751

Story Role and Major Arcs

Grass–Rain Conflict and First Capture

Danzō funded Amegakure's campaign against Kusagakure and considered assassinating the Grass Ninja Leader after Amegakure's losses mounted. His growing suspicion of the conflict proved justified: Kusana had staged the war to extract money from him. 120 121 124

After attempting to escape with fifty million ryō, Danzō was captured and humiliated by Kusana's exaggerated praise. Kusagakure demanded a ransom from Konoha, while Konoha's leadership treated his safe return as strategically vital. 124 150

Kusagakure later released him in a public farewell ceremony. Hiruzen mistakenly credited Danzō with sending intelligence that exposed the Grass–Rain scheme, and Danzō accepted the praise as a Konoha ninja's duty. 151 152

Repeated Captivity and Konoha's Internal Crises

Danzō was captured again while confronting Kusagakure over Konoha's Jinchūriki. He rejected offers to abandon Konoha and instead attempted to negotiate for Naruto's mother. 210

During the Uchiha rebellion, Fugaku's faction seized Danzō as a bargaining chip for its intended defection to Kusagakure. After the rebellion collapsed, a letter confirmed that he had once again been taken to Kusagakure. 248 256

Konoha Recovery and Industrial Campaign

After Konoha's setbacks, Danzō proposed the Prosperity and Village Rescue Plan, seeking to restore Konoha's standing within three years. He argued that dependence on Grass Ninja Manufacturing endangered Konoha's economy and advocated domestic industry, restrictions on Grass goods, and greater investment. 274 275

When Hiruzen rejected his more aggressive proposal, Danzō founded the Root Daily and turned Root into a propaganda outlet. He then built a factory, secured investors, and pursued an independent manufacturing base through Gato and the Land of Waves. 309 331 336

Anti-Grass Alliance Wars

Danzō persuaded the Four Great Ninja Villages to cooperate against Kusagakure's industrial power, initiating a price war through the Land of Waves Production Base. The campaign caused severe losses across the participating villages. 434 435 441

After a period of seclusion, he returned with Orochimaru and advocated another war against the Land of Grass. Although the other Kage excluded him from high command, he became commander of the White Zetsu Vanguard and planned to exhaust the Land of Grass before committing the Impure World Reincarnation army. 571 582

He deployed the White Zetsu in force and later unveiled revived former Kage as a psychological weapon. His plans faltered when Madara removed Hashirama and Tobirama from the battlefield, leaving Danzō without the strongest assets of the alliance. 584 589 601

Danzō entered Navy Headquarters through World Conscription with Hiruzen, Homura, and Koharu. He rose from Rear Admiral to Vice Admiral and proposed creating a Navy equivalent of Root. 648 690

He sought the Gorosei's approval to eliminate suspected spies, took control of the Anti-Grass Special Unit, and used accusations against Sengoku and Kabuto to consolidate authority. 707 749 750

Driven by resentment toward Kusana, Danzō prepared a final campaign against the Land of Grass, including an alliance with pirates and World Government member nations. He refused Hiruzen's suggestion of surrender, believing defeat would leave his humiliation unresolved. 740 751 757

Retirement

After the final conflict, Danzō chose to cooperate with the Land of Grass for the Ninja World's sake and expressed a desire to retire peacefully. He later retired with Hiruzen, Homura, and Koharu, though Kusana continued to pursue him for a fair duel in another world. 767 783
