Background

Matt worked as a lawyer providing legal aid in Hell's Kitchen while secretly protecting the district as Daredevil. He initially maintained a strict distinction between vigilantism and hired violence, and repeatedly concealed his identity when confronted by authorities. 33 34

Hell's Kitchen's abrupt calm unsettled him. While investigating a cry for help, Matt encountered a Deep One—his first battle against a monster—and was injured by its overwhelming strength. The encounter exposed the growing gap between his street-level abilities and the supernatural threats entering the city. 32

Xia Ling exposed Matt's identity and pressured him into becoming a S.H.I.E.L.D. Special Employee. Matt accepted rather than abandon Hell's Kitchen to criminals, cults, and monsters. 33 34

Appearance

Matt normally operates in a tight-fitting Daredevil suit and carries combat equipment at his waist. In civilian life, he wears sunglasses to conceal his blindness. 32 46 148

  • Blind before his later transformation; relies on heightened perception. 32 36
  • Developed insect-like compound eyes after external-demon corruption. 142 148
  • Briefly sprouted transparent insect wings during his uncontrolled transformation; the wings later fell away. 142 148
  • Fights with batons, bladed weapons, sacred staffs, and later a Zen staff. 170 196

Personality

Matt is deeply committed to protecting Hell's Kitchen, even when the Church of Dagon's order temporarily makes the district appear safer. He distrusts peace built on fear, coercion, or blind faith and continues investigating threats that others accept at face value. 46 49

Repeated defeats by supernatural opponents leave him frustrated and doubtful of his place in an increasingly superpowered world. His studies under Yellow Brow Buddha initially push him toward a lethal interpretation of justice, leading him to decide that killing Kingpin is necessary. 80 88 91

Despite this shift, Matt remains compassionate toward allies and civilians. He supports Hawkeye through trauma, warns him against Mephisto's bargain, and later accepts Hawkeye's powers because they are being used to protect innocents. 139 145 170

Abilities & Skills

Enhanced Senses

Matt uses heightened perception to navigate, identify danger, and direct allies despite being blind.

  • Located a distant cry for help and tracked its source through Hell's Kitchen. 32
  • Avoided hospital security and surveillance while infiltrating Kingpin's location. 91
  • Detects abnormal energy fluctuations and identifies their source during battles against Deep Ones. 218 219
  • Guides allies away from concentrated attacks during the battle against Nagash and Strange. 179 219

  • Learned martial arts through Yellow Brow Buddha's teachings, gaining strength and speed beyond his earlier capabilities. 91
  • Incapacitated a fused axe-wielding pursuer and extracted Hawkeye from an ambush. 138
  • Uses precise close-quarters combat while operating alongside S.H.I.E.L.D. agents. 170 171

Buddhist Cultivation

Matt studies at a temple associated with Yellow Brow Buddha and seeks to use Buddhist teachings against evil.

  • Received instruction on “killing to stop killing,” which influenced his decision to target Kingpin lethally. 88 91
  • Uses scripture-infused sacred-staff strikes against Kingpin's magic. 142
  • Received Bukong's introspection method and a Golden Elixir to expel the external demon. 148
  • His later Zen staff attacks release golden light that weakens demonic energy. 196

External-Demon Corruption

Matt's cultivation becomes compromised by an external demon, producing powerful but unstable mutations.

  • His eyes become insect-like compound eyes, alarming both Matt and Hawkeye. 142 148
  • Manifests wings, increased strength, enhanced senses, and temporary sight. 142 143
  • Initially cannot control the transformation and is vulnerable to losing himself in its power. 142 143
  • Seeks purification rather than accepting the mutation as a source of strength. 148
