Background / History

Vegeta was the prince of the Saiyans, but the destruction of Planet Vegeta and the collapse of the Saiyan people left his title largely symbolic. He retained the race's hierarchy and pride, regarding himself as inherently superior to lower-class warriors such as Bardock and Kakarot. 131 216

Before coming to Earth, he tried to stop Bardock from taking Raditz away. Bardock defeated him decisively, establishing an early humiliation that continued to shape Vegeta's hostility toward Bardock's family. 131

When Vegeta later arrived on Earth with Nappa, he expected to reclaim his pride and confront Bardock. Instead, he found that Bardock, Gine, Raditz, Goku, and even several Earthlings had become extraordinarily strong through training. 216 218 Krillin pushed him into a serious fight with a Power Level near 160,000, while Bulma repeatedly defeated and healed him to stimulate Saiyan recovery growth. 220 222

Vegeta challenged Frieza after his power rose to roughly three million, seeking revenge and believing his new strength sufficient. Frieza easily beat him down, but Bulma protected him with a 20x Kaio-ken. The experience of being shielded by another person was unfamiliar to Vegeta and began changing his view of Bulma. 227 228
