History
Four thousand years ago, the Sun Moon Continent collided with the Douluo Continent, permanently reshaping both landmasses. The Sun Moon Empire, which had once ruled the entire Sun Moon Continent, ultimately lost territory to the Star Luo and Heaven Dou Empires after the conflict. 69 203
During the early period of continental conflict, the Empire launched major assaults against the bordering Heavenly Soul and Star Luo Empires. Shrek Academy eventually organized the Douluo Continent’s forces for a counterattack, with the Dragon Elephant Sect’s ancestors among the first to answer Shrek’s call. 13
At the time of the novel, Xu Pingye rules after assassinating his elder brother with outside assistance during a violent palace coup. His initially diligent rule gave way to worsening illness, factional struggle among his sons, and mounting evidence that his rise to power involved Evil Soul Masters. 21 47 85
Xu Pingye later attempted to declare war on the Douluo Continent without a viable objective or strategy. Kong Deming intervened, cancelled the order, and began considering the Emperor’s removal after confirming his connections to Evil Soul Masters. 136
Government and Society
Imperial Family
The Sun Moon Imperial Family’s inherited Martial Souls were narrowed through selection to the Sun and the Purple Blazing Heaven Dragon. Xu Pingye possesses the Purple Blazing Heaven Dragon, a super Martial Soul with destruction, dragon, and divine-beast attributes. 76
The Imperial Family historically regarded dark skin as an orthodox trait, though this characteristic has become lighter and rarer across many branches over generations. 37 85
A noble house linked to the Fourth Prince’s maternal line promoted an artificial racial hierarchy based on skin tone, treating pure black skin as a supposed mark of nobility. 85
Court Factions
Xu Pingye’s illegitimate accession weakened his ability to restrain his children. The princes formed competing court factions, while powerful sects such as the Dragon Elephant Sect avoided taking sides. 21
By the internal crisis, Xu Pingye had lost the support of much of the military, many Soul Engineers, and major nobles. Kong Deming’s loyalty was to the Empire itself rather than to any individual emperor. 136
Royal Treasury
The royal treasury is separate from the national treasury: the former belongs to the Imperial Family, while the latter serves the state. 123
- The treasury is a sealed collection space of roughly 150 square meters, with display shelves that preserve an item’s power and spirituality indefinitely. 123
- Its contents include plundered or recovered treasures such as Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon bones, remains of powerful Extreme North Soul Beasts, and an unusable materialized artifact Martial Soul. 123
- Xu Pingye uses access to the treasury as a personal means of rewarding meritorious subjects and cultivating allies. 123
Soul Tool Technology
The Sun Moon Empire is the foremost Soul Tool power among the continental states. Its technological advantage is described as generations ahead of the Douluo Continent, and Soul Tools are integrated into daily life throughout Mingdu. 235 251
During the collision era, Soul Tool technology was limited to Rank 7. Following the Empire’s defeat, later research pushed the ceiling to Rank 8, while the current era possesses Rank 9 Soul Engineers and Soul Cannon Shells capable of threatening even top-tier Soul Masters. 150 118
Mingde Hall
Mingde Hall is the Empire’s highest institution for Soul Engineers and its foremost Soul Tool research center. 33
- Founder: Kong Deming, who is also revered as a supreme authority among Soul Engineers. 122
- Hall Master: Jing Hongchen, a Rank 9 Soul Engineer known as the Golden Toad Douluo. 20
- Research focus: High-level Soul Tools, spiritual-metal drilling tools, battle armor, Soul Cannon Shells, and humanoid Soul Tool development. 38 120 171
- Strategic role: Its Rank 9 Soul Engineers can conceal and evacuate personnel through specially designed drilling Soul Tools during overseas operations. 120
Soul Tool Development
The Empire develops Soul Tools for both individual and military use.
- The proposed Humanoid Soul Tool is intended for mass production and would substantially raise the combat strength of ordinary Sun Moon Soul Masters. 38
- Rank 9 Soul Tool technology includes devices capable of storing soul rings released by Soul Beasts killed with Soul Cannon Shells. 71
- The Empire employs Soul Tools for medicine production, prioritizing affordable, versatile, low-side-effect remedies that can be widely distributed. 110
- High-level Soul Cannon Shells are powerful enough that foreign forces covet both the weapons and their manufacturing methods. 243
Military
The Empire’s military strength exceeds that of the Star Luo Empire and Heaven Spirit Empire combined, supported by superior Soul Tool technology. 251
- Guardian of the Nation legions — Five elite combat forces that represent the Empire’s highest military standard. 84 203
- Imperial Dragon Soul Engineer Corps — An Imperial Family-controlled unit; Black Moon Douluo Kong Jie formerly served within it. 36
- Dragon Elephant Soul Engineer Regiment — A former sect-based regiment renowned for crushing lower-level Soul Masters. It suffered devastating losses a century earlier and was later largely disbanded due to insufficient personnel. 4 136
- Rank 9 Soul Engineers — The Empire can deploy more than ten at once, creating a deterrent sufficient to pressure Peerless Douluo-level opponents. 125 136
The Dragon Elephant Regiment’s Diamond Mammoth and White Armored Earth Dragon Martial Souls, combined with Soul Tools, made its soldiers exceptionally difficult to stop on the battlefield. 203
Education
Sun Moon Empire Royal Soul Engineer Academy
The Royal Soul Engineer Academy is the Empire’s premier academy and the strongest academy directly controlled by its Imperial Family. 55 251
Its students are trained in both Soul Master cultivation and Soul Tool combat. Jing Hongchen used his authority to place Chen Ming, Xiao Hongchen, and Meng Hongchen directly into its elite Class One. 55
The academy’s teams represent the Empire in the Continental Advanced Soul Master Academy Elite Tournament. Their victories and confrontations with Shrek Academy are treated as indicators of the wider balance of power between the two continents. 236
Foreign Relations
- Shrek Academy — The Empire’s principal long-term rival and a major obstacle to continental unification. Shrek’s historical concentration of high-level Soul Masters once restrained Sun Moon expansion. 38 251
- Star Luo Empire — A bordering rival with a history of invasions, border warfare, tournament disputes, and compensation demands after attacks on Sun Moon contestants. 84 239 240
- Heaven Dou Empire — A neighboring rival that acquired former Sun Moon territory after the continental collision. 69 203
- Heaven Spirit Empire — Militarily weaker than the other major states and reliant on Soul Tools imported from the Sun Moon Empire. 106
- Holy Spirit Cult — A covert destabilizing force whose Evil Soul Masters infiltrated noble and imperial circles, including factions connected to Xu Pingye and the Fourth Prince. 47 48 136
- Dragon Elephant Sect — A major Sun Moon sect with historical military ties to the Empire, though it maintains formal neutrality in imperial succession struggles. 4 21
- Hongchen Family — A leading Soul Tool family whose head, Jing Hongchen, directs Mingde Hall while prioritizing the Empire’s prosperity over personal loyalty to the throne. 20 48
Major Events
- Palace Coup — Xu Pingye assassinates his elder brother and takes the throne with outside assistance. 21
- Border War — A prolonged conflict with the Star Luo Empire causes heavy losses and retaliatory devastation on both sides. 84
- Spirit Fighting City Incident — Kong Deming, Jing Hongchen, and Chen Li confront Shrek-affiliated forces; the Empire captures Xuan Zi and multiple Shrek students. 118 122
- Royal Commendation — Xu Pingye rewards the Royal Soul Engineer Academy team after its victory, granting Chen Ming the right to choose one treasure from the royal treasury. 122
- Internal Strife — Kong Deming blocks Xu Pingye’s reckless declaration of war, while the Fourth Prince plots against Crown Prince Xu Tianran with Evil Soul Master assistance. 136
- Continental Tournament Victory — The Sun Moon Empire Royal Soul Engineer Team is declared champion after Huo Yuhao kills Dai Huabin and the competition ends abruptly. 263
