Background / History

Mu En met Long Xiaoyao during a training journey when both independently attacked Evil Soul Masters who had devastated a village. After eliminating the attackers, they became friends, traveled the continent together, and frequently fought side by side. Their dragon bloodlines allowed them to develop a Martial Soul Fusion Skill 91.

Both men became infatuated with Ye Xishui. She exploited Long Xiaoyao’s trust and staged an incident that drove the two friends into painful conflict. By the time Mu En recognizes Long Xiaoyao in the Sky Curtain, they have not seen each other for a century 9 10.

Shrek’s conflict with the Body Sect included a battle between Mu En and a previous Body Sect master, leaving Mu En severely injured. After failing to find a divine inheritance, he attempted to absorb a Dragon Pill, hoping to recover and attract the God Realm’s attention. The attempt instead devastated his origin and left him unable to straighten his back 78 87 89.

The violent energy within him eventually spread to his heart and dantian. Wang Xian’er could not cure it, and Shrek’s extensive use of treasures and immortal-grade medicinal herbs brought little improvement. The Golden Ancient Tree helped sustain his life while he continued leading the academy 6 78 87.

Appearance

Mu En initially appears as a gaunt elderly man in a wheelchair, with deep, kind eyes and an apparently failing body 3.

  • Contemporary appearance: White hair, a permanently bent back, and a frail physique caused by damage to his origin 87.
  • Restored future appearance: Golden eyes, flowing black hair, and white robes trimmed in gold; his bearing is calm and steady 87.
  • Bright Dragon King form: A massive winged dragon surrounded by radiant light, with scales that refract beams and wings that stir purifying winds 90.

Personality

Mu En’s gentle manner conceals formidable authority. He listens to the pavilion elders but firmly overrides them when he believes Shrek’s survival requires it. He criticizes Xuan Zi’s impulsiveness and Yan Shaozhe’s fixation on immediate gains, repeatedly urging both to consider the academy’s interests and the wider situation 17 18.

His devotion to Shrek outweighs reverence for its founders. Supporting Gu Tian means risking Tang San’s anger, yet Mu En chooses that alliance rather than allowing ancestral loyalty to endanger the academy. His decision is also pragmatic: with his health failing and his successors unprepared, neutrality offers no reliable protection 8 17 18.

He rejects the belief that an Evil Martial Soul makes its wielder inherently evil. He forbids indiscriminate killing and argues that guidance can help such Soul Masters live normally, although the other elders resist his position. His concern for responsibility also extends to his disciples: he punishes Yan Shaozhe for abandoning responsibility after Feng Ling’s awakening, rather than merely for sparing her 40 80.

Abilities & Skills

Bright Holy Dragon

Mu En’s martial soul is a true dragon, though its bloodline is described as that of an ordinary true dragon rather than one of the ancient Dragon Kings 68.

  • Its bloodline resonates with Long Xiaoyao’s Dark Holy Dragon, enabling Martial Soul Fusion 9 91.
  • It experiences bloodline suppression when Mu En witnesses his future Bright Dragon King form 89.

Golden Ancient Tree Connection

Mu En can communicate with the Golden Ancient Tree and draw on its power 78.

  • Sea God’s Light: Produces purification capable of temporarily suppressing Original Sin Power 103.
  • External avatars: The tree’s power allows him to create avatars possessing immense strength 78.
  • Barrier reinforcement: Uses seals and ancient incantations to channel the tree’s golden veins into a failing protective shield 103.
  • Limit: Sustained use drains both Soul Power and life force, particularly in his injured condition 103.

Mu En originally intended to leave his Soul Power and part of his soul within the tree after death, continuing to protect Shrek through symbiosis. Such preservation would eventually end in absorption by the tree and prevent reincarnation. He reconsiders after suspecting the tree is a connection point between Douluo Continent and the God Realm 87.

Bright Dragon King Inheritance

Mu En’s projected future self inherits the Bright Dragon King’s power and can assume its dragon form 89 90.

  • Wields Light Divine Power, radiant energy, purifying winds, and concentrated light beams 90 92.
  • Coordinates precise attacks with Long Xiaoyao, including striking the junction of Zhou Weiqing’s hammer handle and head 90.
  • Limit: The inheritance does not make him individually equal to its original holder. He and Long Xiaoyao are identified as Second-level Deities, and neither can match Zhou Weiqing alone 90 93.

Light Dark Dragon God Transformation

A Divine Soul Fusion Skill performed with Long Xiaoyao after the pair inherit the Bright and Dark Dragon Kings’ legacies 90 91.

  • Combines complementary light and darkness into temporary God King-level power 90 91.
  • Defeats and injures Zhou Weiqing despite his transformations and equipment 91.
  • Limit: Their underlying cultivation remains too low to withstand the God of Destruction’s attack without severe injury 93.

Light Dark Dragon God Shield

A joint defensive technique used by Mu En and Long Xiaoyao in the projected battle against the God of Destruction 93.

  • Intertwines Light Divine Power and Dark Energy into a dragon-patterned shield 93.
  • Can be reinforced by burning Mu En’s remaining power and sacrificing part of Long Xiaoyao’s divine soul 93.
  • Limit: Forced use depletes their origins; Mu En suffers severe blood loss and a major reduction in his aura 93.

Relationships

  • Gu Tian — Shrek’s chosen future leader and the focus of Mu En’s political gamble. Mu En allies with Star Luo to protect him; in the projected future, Gu Tian rescues and heals Mu En during the divine war 17 18 93.
  • Long Xiaoyao — Longstanding friend, traveling companion, and fellow member of the Black and White Twin Dragons. Their century-long estrangement gives way to renewed battlefield cooperation in the projected future 9 90 91.
  • Ye Xishui — A woman Mu En loved in his youth. Her staged incident fractured his friendship with Long Xiaoyao 10.
  • Xuan Zi — Martial nephew whom Mu En raised from childhood and selected as successor. Mu En values his strength but repeatedly disciplines his recklessness 17 18 43 79.
  • Yan Shaozhe — Disciple who regularly seeks his guidance. Mu En challenges his shortsightedness and previously confined him to the academy for three years over his irresponsible handling of Feng Ling 8 18 80.
  • Bei Bei — Great-grandson. Mu En tacitly permits him to join the declining Tang Sect partly out of guilt 18.
  • Ye Yu / Azure Luan Douluo — Older-generation acquaintance and Star Luo’s intermediary. Their meeting leads to the Shrek–Star Luo alliance 14 17.
  • Elder Song and Lin Huiyun — Senior colleagues who handle much of Shrek’s actual administration. Elder Song supports his alliance decision, while Mu En advises Lin Huiyun to implement changes gradually 17 83.
  • Tang San — Formerly revered as Shrek’s ancestor. Mu En increasingly distinguishes the academy from Tang San as the Sky Curtain exposes his schemes and abuse of his daughter 8 17 52 54.
