Background / History

Chen Tong was originally a mortal who drowned and acquired the Strongest River God System. Its initial rewards included the Invincible River God Domain and the Primordial Diary. Though his cultivation rose rapidly, he remained within the safety of his domain for 500 years, accepting only low-risk quests. 1

An iron rod falling into his river began the System's ultimate quest, Alter the Journey to the West. Chen Tong's first assigned objective was to return the Golden Cudgel to Sun Wukong. When the Primordial Diary unlocked, Chen Tong wrote of Sun Wukong's predetermined fate, allowing the Monkey King to discover the plot surrounding his future. 1 3

His interventions against the Heavenly Court and Buddhism steadily escalated. He aided Tian Peng, defied the Jade Emperor, resisted Tathagata, rescued Sun Wukong from Five Elements Mountain, and openly protected Jiu'er and the Emerald Dragon Palace. 17 20 54 61 63

After escaping into the Sea of Death, Chen Tong absorbed deadly Death Qi and forged an agreement with the Death Underworld Dragon, curing it of the corrosive energy in exchange for its recognition of him as master. 32 34 37

Personality

Chen Tong is cautious when survival is at stake; despite rapid early growth, he spent five centuries avoiding dangerous assignments outside his River God Domain. 1 He is also confident to the point of provocation when confronting stronger opponents, openly refusing demands from the Jade Emperor and Tathagata. 20 56

He is fiercely protective of those he considers friends or innocent victims. He intervenes for Tian Peng, Sun Wukong, Bing Lin and Bing Xue, Jiu'er, and Chen Qianye, sometimes at severe personal cost. 17 43 49 61 92 His compassion is tempered by pragmatism: he initially refused Old Ancestor Jiouming's request for aid, but later agreed after considering the threat posed to the Immortal Spirit Realm. 81 82
