Background / History

Tathagata is summoned by the Jade Emperor when Sun Wukong devastates the Heavenly Court. Introducing himself as the Tathagata Buddha of the Western Heaven, he confronts Wukong with open contempt and attempts to capture him with an immense Buddhist hand. 8

After Wukong evades the initial grasp with the Somersault Cloud, Tathagata manifests five enormous mountains—revealed to be his fingers—to entrap him. Chen Tong directs Wukong into a river, allowing the monkey to escape Tathagata’s suppression. 9

Tathagata then confronts Chen Tong directly. He dismisses Chen as a mere Heavenly Immortal, disperses the fire phoenixes created by the Divine Brush, and treats Buzhou Mountain as insufficient to alter their difference in strength. 10 Chen’s River God Domain prevents Tathagata from striking either Chen or Wukong, while Chen neutralizes Tathagata’s Brahma sound with Myriad Laws Break. Tathagata withdraws after the confrontation, though he remains determined to suppress Wukong later. 11

Following this setback, Tathagata coordinates with the Jade Emperor to preserve the Journey to the West plan, calling Wukong only one pawn while noting that the other three remain available for maneuvering. 13 He later sends Golden Cicada to the mortal realm and orders Guanyin to oversee General Juanlian’s descent, refusing to let the final member of the planned journey be disrupted. 28

When Chen Tong’s tsunami threatens widespread destruction, Tathagata intervenes under the Jade Emperor’s decree and attempts to persuade Chen to let the matter go. He subsequently draws Chen to the Spiritual River of Spiritual Mountain, where he demands the suspected Heavenly Dao artifact in Chen’s possession and attempts to probe Chen’s mind. 22 23

Tathagata pursues Chen into the Sea of Death, seeking to return him to Spiritual Mountain for punishment. He withstands the Death Underworld Dragon’s Soul Strike, but retreats when Chen establishes an inviolable water barrier in the Northern Darkness Sea. 35 37

At Fire Cloud Cave, Tathagata pressures the Three Humanity Saints to surrender Sun Wukong, even threatening a Saint War. He captures Wukong with a golden chain of law and later brings him to Southeast Five Finger Mountain for public suppression. 51 53

Chen Tong’s intervention at Five Finger Mountain leads to further conflict. Tathagata cannot immediately overcome the Origin Hall’s protection, battles Chen alongside the Jade Emperor, and seeks to force Chen’s surrender and return to Spiritual Mountain. 54 57

After the Western Journey plan is ruined, Tathagata shifts his focus toward attaining power beyond the Heavenly Dao. He sends Guanyin to the Immortal Spirit Realm to retrieve the Jade Pure Bottle, arrange a new scheme, and eliminate Chen Tong so that Tathagata may use the Twelve Realms to break through the Saint bottleneck. 67
