Background / History

Sun Wukong returns from studying at Mount Fangcun and loses his ordinary iron rod in a strange river. Chen Tong presents him with an iron staff, Silver Cudgel, and Golden Cudgel; Wukong initially attacks Chen Tong, mistakes him for a demon, and deliberately chooses the lesser weapons to avoid being manipulated. After Chen Tong destroys both alternatives, Wukong accepts the Golden Cudgel, discovers it responds naturally to him, shrinks it to an embroidery needle, and stores it behind his ear 1 2.

He later finds a supplementary volume of the Primordial Diary, which reveals that the Heavenly Court and Thunderclap Monastery intend to use him as a pawn in the Journey to the West. Though initially skeptical, he resolves to resist if its warnings prove true 3. When Black and White Impermanence hook his soul after his lifespan ends, he recognizes that the diary’s prediction has begun to come true 4.

In the Underworld, Wukong refuses Meng Po’s soup, defeats its enforcers, breaks the Soul-Hooking Lock and Ox-Head’s Silver Ring Great Saber, and tears apart the Book of Life and Death. He openly challenges Empress Houtu and vows to flatten the Underworld 5 6.

Forewarned by Chen Tong’s diary, Wukong defeats Li Jing and ten thousand Heavenly Soldiers and Generals, destroys the South Heavenly Gate, and storms the Heavenly Court. He unleashes Monkey Spirits and devastates the palace until Tathagata confronts him 6 7 8. Tathagata traps him within a manifestation of his palm, but Chen Tong directs Wukong into a river and prevents his immediate suppression 9 11.

Afterward, Wukong cultivates under Chen Tong, receives medicine for his hidden injuries, and accepts Chen Tong’s advice to postpone revenge until he has sufficient strength. He also infiltrates the Heavenly Court in disguise during the Peach Banquet and consumes the elixirs in Doushuai Palace 12 13 14 15.

Tathagata later captures Wukong outside Fire Cloud Cave with a chain of law despite Wukong’s resistance and the protection of the Three Saints. He is brought to Southeast Five Finger Mountain, where Buddhist seals suppress him; Chen Tong intervenes with the Origin Hall and briefly extracts him from the encirclement of immortals and Buddhas 51 53 54. Following their pursuit by Tathagata and the Jade Emperor, Wukong is left unconscious before Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva takes custody of him 56 58.

Appearance

Sun Wukong is a furry Stone Monkey who first appears in coarse cloth. He is described with yellow or golden fur and a “thunder god’s mouth,” while his divine weapon is usually concealed behind his ear in needle form 1 2 4.

Personality

Wukong is fiercely independent, proud, and quick to challenge anyone who attempts to command or deceive him. His first response to Chen Tong is violence, and he continues to reject the authority of the Underworld, Heavenly Court, and Tathagata even when facing overwhelming opponents 2 5 8 51.

He is also cunning and suspicious. Rather than immediately accept the most valuable staff Chen Tong offers, he intentionally chooses the iron staff and then the Silver Cudgel because he believes the Golden Cudgel is the answer Chen Tong wants. He later successfully impersonates the Netherworld Cult Master to deceive the Barefoot Immortal 2 14.

Despite his arrogance, Wukong is capable of gratitude and reflection. Chen Tong’s repeated aid leaves him deeply moved, and he eventually accepts his benefactor’s counsel to delay revenge and cultivate instead of rushing into another unwinnable confrontation 9 10 12 13.
