Background

The Uchiha Clan descends from Indra Ōtsutsuki, while the Senju Clan descends from Indra's younger brother, Asura. Their conflict continued through the reincarnation of Indra and Asura's Chakra for over a thousand years, with Black Zetsu repeatedly aggravating the divide. Uchiha Madara and Hashirama Senju eventually led their respective clans into the foundation of Konoha. 92 93

Despite being founders, the Uchiha became increasingly isolated within the village. They were assigned the Military Police Force, a role Minagawa characterized as thankless: successful policing earned little praise, while failures and public resentment were directed at the clan. 91 During the Third Shinobi World War, Fugaku led Uchiha forces against Kirigakure despite Fire Style being disadvantaged in that theater, building much of his prestige through the clan's sacrifices. 26 27 48

Following the Nine-Tails attack, the Sharingan seen in the beast's eyes deepened Konoha's suspicion of the clan. Danzō's desire for Sharingan power and the public emergence of exceptionally dangerous Mangekyō users—particularly Shisui and Itachi—made the higher-ups view the Uchiha as increasingly uncontrollable. 1 22

Uchiha Clan Downfall Crisis

Danzō's ambush of Shisui and seizure of his Mangekyō Sharingan became a key escalation in the conflict. Root then surrounded the Uchiha compound with Anbu forces as Konoha's leadership prepared to destroy the clan. 1 29 42

Itachi initially acted under the belief that killing the clan would preserve Konoha's peace, killing several peripheral members before Minagawa stopped and confronted him. Minagawa exposed the higher-ups' role in provoking the crisis and convinced Itachi to assist the clan rather than complete the massacre. 21 22 26 29 61

Under Minagawa's emergency arrangements, Uchiha with Two-Tomoe Sharingan or higher were mobilized, while weaker members and noncombatants were directed to take refuge at Naka Shrine. Fugaku, Itachi, and Minagawa then led the clan's defense and counterattack. 30 33 34

The clan attacked Root, defeated Danzō's forces, and looted Root's records, scrolls, and research data after Danzō was killed. Fugaku subsequently presented evidence that Root had murdered Uchiha, harvested Sharingan, and conducted human experimentation, turning other major clans against the Konoha leadership's attempt to blame the Uchiha. 35 40 42 43

Post-Crisis Reorganization

After the Root conflict, the clan returned to its compound and ended the Naka Shrine alert. Fugaku considered Danzō's death and the damage to the higher-ups' prestige a major opening for the clan's future. 46

Fugaku convened a judgment over Itachi's killings. He publicly accepted responsibility as Itachi's father, knelt before the victims' families, and asked the clan to permit Itachi to atone. The clan ultimately chose reconciliation over immediate punishment, prioritizing internal unity. 48

Itachi later left Konoha, while Fugaku introduced a relocation list and a new code of conduct for the Military Police Force. The changes caused internal resistance, but Minagawa argued that the clan needed to change its relationship with the village rather than remain trapped in its old crisis. 50

The clan also pursued political reform rather than permanent monopoly over the Hokage position. Fugaku proposed five-year Hokage terms, limited consecutive reelection, and a jōnin vote of confidence, arguing for a system in which other capable factions could also compete for leadership. 116

Culture and Internal Politics

The clan places exceptional value on strength, particularly the Sharingan. The simultaneous revelation of three Mangekyō Sharingan pairs transformed Fugaku, Itachi, and Minagawa's standing; even former critics accepted their authority after witnessing the gap between Mangekyō and ordinary Three-Tomoe users. 33 34

The Mangekyō Sharingan is regarded as a legendary symbol of the clan's former glory. Its reappearance caused clan elders and radical members alike to view the Uchiha's resurgence as inevitable. 34
