Early life and Anbu service

Itachi was raised as Fugaku's eldest son and the Uchiha's young clan head. He experienced the battlefield at age four, endured continual training, and entered the Anbu shortly after turning ten. His upbringing emphasized strength and duty, leaving him vulnerable to the influence of Konoha's leadership. 21 26 48

He became convinced that destroying the Uchiha would preserve Konoha's peace, prevent a coup, and spare the clan the stigma of treason. Danzō exploited this belief by threatening Sasuke's safety, persuading Itachi to assist in the clan's extermination. 10 20

Clan extermination crisis

Itachi and Obito began the planned attack on the Uchiha compound, with Itachi personally killing more than a dozen clansmen before Minagawa intervened. When challenged over the murder of defenseless civilians, he initially remained committed to the belief that resistance would doom both Konoha and the Uchiha. 20 21 26 48

Minagawa defeated and captured him, then dismantled his faith in Konoha's high command by revealing the Uchiha's wartime persecution and the leadership's political motives.
