Background / History
A collateral descendant of the Gu Family, Gu Chen had received limited resources and lacked access to the family’s core teachings. At the border, he found training methods better suited to him and began to reveal the potential that his family had overlooked. 32
He entered the Warrior Camp alongside several Gu Family brothers and acted as Gu Han’s elder brother and protector. During early recruit training, he shared his own rewards with the group and intended to use surplus Blood Tempering Pills to help Gu Han improve. 7
Personality
Gu Chen is protective, responsible, and willing to bear consequences for his family. When Lei Chao accused Gu Han over Li Xuan’s disappearance, Gu Chen stepped forward immediately, refused to surrender his brother without evidence, and accepted the grievance in Gu Han’s place. 17
He is also disciplined and calculating. After Lei Chao injured him, Gu Chen spent the seven-day confinement period cultivating and preparing a counterattack rather than acting recklessly. He later concealed the extent of both his and Gu Han’s abilities to avoid attracting further attention from enemy spies. 19 37
In battle, Gu Chen can be ruthless toward hostile opponents. He nearly killed Zhao Zhen during the Tenth Battalion Grand Competition and deliberately prolonged later matches before incapacitating challengers who targeted the Second Camp. 49 50
Abilities & Skills
Swordsmanship
Gu Chen is an accomplished swordsman whose refined technique lets him contend with opponents of greater cultivation.
- Ambushed Lei Chao with a sword strike powerful enough to force him back six or seven steps. 31
- Broke Lei Chao’s Low-grade Yellow Rank saber with his standard-issue sword and defeated him in their rematch. 32
- Uses unusual, winding sword trajectories to disarm opponents and create lethal openings. 49
- Easily defeated an opponent in the Grand Competition without drawing his sword from its sheath. 49
- His swordsmanship was initially sufficient to offset Lei Chao’s superior raw strength, allowing their first rematch to reach a stalemate. 31
Sword Master
Gu Chen carries a sword-shaped pendant inhabited by the Sword Elder, whose voice can be heard only by him. After Lei Chao’s assault, Gu Chen chose to become the Sword Elder’s sword master to obtain the strength needed to defeat Lei Chao. 19
- Receives warnings and battlefield assessments from the Sword Elder, including notice of the enemy group approaching during his fight with Lei Chao. 32
- Fights with greater confidence while the Sword Elder monitors the situation. 33
- Possesses the Nine Heavens Immortal Sword Art, though Gu Chen maintains that his natural talent and border training would still have allowed him to improve. 32
Endurance and Combat Resolve
Gu Chen continued resisting despite injuries that left blood at the corner of his mouth and both arms trembling after Lei Chao’s punch. 17
- Withstood an attack from a Ninth-order Martial Disciple without having his arm bones shattered. 17
- Challenged all opposing camps to face him, accepting even a succession of battles after Yu Qitian was injured. 50
- Sustained repeated Grand Competition matches by appearing evenly matched before breaking opponents’ ribs or arms and throwing them from the stage. 50
