Background / History

Lei Chao belonged to an earlier cohort of warriors and had remained at the camp for two years. He was considered the strongest among a group of veteran warriors and could rank within the top ten of his cohort's thousand warriors. His cultivation had reached the Ninth-Order Martial Disciple realm, leaving him one step from becoming a Martial Artist 16 17.

After logistics soldier Li Xuan disappeared, Lei Chao pursued Gu Han because Li Xuan was his fellow townsman. He searched the logistics camp for Gu Han before forcing his way into the Warrior Camp and demanding Gu Han's brothers hand him over 16 17.

Lei Chao attacked Gu Chen without warning, seriously injuring him with a punch while accusing him of helping Gu Han kill Li Xuan. Gu Chen and Yu Qitian refused to surrender Gu Han without evidence, and the surrounding recruits united against Lei Chao's intimidation 17 18. Instructor Deng Li intervened, compelled him to apologize, and placed him under one week of house arrest 18.

When his confinement ended, Lei Chao immediately followed Gu Chen into the wilderness to settle their conflict. Though initially stronger, he was unable to overcome Gu Chen's swordsmanship; Gu Chen broke his Low-grade Yellow Rank saber, defeated him, and nearly killed him 31 32.

Lei Chao revealed his connection to enemy agents when four Sword-toothed Country operatives arrived to surround Gu Chen. He admitted he had not come alone and delayed Gu Chen's escape despite his severe injuries 32. Guan Shan subsequently captured Lei Chao and the surviving spies, and later publicly exposed him as a traitor 34 38.

Lei Chao is arrogant, confrontational, and dismissive of those he considers weaker. He insulted the new recruits as “trash,” attacked without warning, and relied on his seniority and superior cultivation to bully Gu Chen and the other recruits 17 18.

He is deeply concerned with face and retaliation. His forced apology to Gu Chen was resentful rather than sincere, and after his confinement ended, he immediately sought Gu Chen out to kill him 18 31. Even after being defeated and maimed, he used desperate and ruthless tactics—including trapping Gu Chen by biting his pant leg—to buy time for his allies 32.

Despite his hostility toward recruits, Lei Chao showed restraint before Instructor Deng Li, whom he recognized as a former instructor and feared challenging directly 18.
