Background / History
Yuanshi participated with Venerable Taishang and Sect Master Tongtian in signing the Investiture of the Gods before the Great Tribulation. He expected the Intercepting Sect to supply most of the listed gods, while believing his own disciples could overcome the tribulation through their virtue and cultivation 2.
Shen Zhaochi's True Spirit entering the true Investiture of the Gods immediately disrupted Yuanshi's assumptions. Unable to calculate the anomaly due to chaotic Heavenly Secrets, Yuanshi initially dismissed the event as impossible and later blamed Tongtian when Guangchengzi was forcibly listed 2 16.
His attempts to uncover the force behind Shi Ji's resurrection and the altered calamity brought severe consequences. When he used the Pangu Banner to trace the past, the Investiture of the Gods confounded causality and Heavenly Secrets, causing a Great Dao backlash that injured him and led him to seal Kunlun Mountain 25 26.
Personality
Yuanshi is deeply invested in the dignity of both himself and the Heavenly Origin Sect. He regards the sect as the orthodox Mystic Gate lineage and considers many Intercepting Sect disciples—especially those of non-human origin—unworthy of its standing 2 100.
His confidence rests on calculation, hierarchy, and control. Repeated reversals—the listing of his disciples, the collapse of his plans at Xi Qi, and the emergence of Shen Zhaochi's Godhood—gradually turn this confidence into suspicion, humiliation, and rage 25 100 130.
He remains fiercely protective of his disciples despite his severity. After the Twelve Golden Immortals are ruined, he gives them major Innate Spiritual Treasures for a final counterattack, disregarding prior rules and etiquette in pursuit of the sect's redemption 136.
Abilities & Skills
Heavenly Dao Saint Authority
Yuanshi possesses Saint-level control over the Laws of heaven and earth.
- A casual finger tap erased the spiritual energy, Laws, and runes sustaining the Ten Absolute Arrays at a conceptual level 106.
- His Saintly pressure can freeze a battlefield and leave Golden Immortals unable to resist 106.
- His Jade Purity Immortal Light can form a giant hand capable of threatening the Sanxiao sisters and their Nine Bends Yellow River Formation 44.
- His personal intervention is restricted during the Investiture of the Gods; Dao Ancestor Hongjun repeatedly forbids Saints from directly participating in the calamity 64 135.
Divination and Heavenly-Secret Investigation
Yuanshi can calculate fate and investigate causality, and had originally mapped out the expected course of the Investiture of the Gods 100.
- He used the Pangu Banner to attempt a temporal investigation into Shi Ji's resurrection 25.
- Shen Zhaochi's control of the true Investiture of the Gods can confound Heavenly Secrets and turn Yuanshi's investigation into a backlash 25.
- He cannot investigate the core area of Golden Ao Island where “Mister Shen” resides 100.
Saintly Origin Ignition
When enraged by Nuwa's resistance, Yuanshi burns his Saintly origin to amplify the Pangu Banner's power.
- The technique greatly increases the force of his attacks against the Mountain River Society Map 59.
- It reflects his willingness to endanger himself to preserve his dignity and suppress his opponents 59.
- During the battle at Jiepai Pass, he prepares an even more destructive attack at the potential cost of his Saintly position and Dao fruits before Hongjun's decree forces him to stop 134 135.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Pangu Banner — Yuanshi's foremost offensive treasure; releases chaos sword qi capable of tearing through layered worlds created by Nuwa's Mountain River Society Map 25 59.
- Myriad Heavens Auspicious Cloud — Defensive treasure that releases hanging lamps and radiance to protect Yuanshi during his confrontation with Taishang 54 59.
- Nine Dragon Agarwood Carriage — His majestic Saint carriage, drawn by nine divine dragons and used for his descents to Xi Qi 106.
- Innate Spiritual Treasures — Yuanshi maintains a large treasury and later distributes prized defensive and offensive treasures to the Twelve Golden Immortals 6 136.
Relationships
- Venerable Taishang / Grand Supreme Elder Laozi — Elder brother among the Three Pure Ones. Taishang tries to moderate Yuanshi's actions, but their disagreement over Sanxiao escalates into a Saint battle within the Taiji Diagram 25 45.
- Sect Master Tongtian — Fellow Pure One and leader of the Intercepting Sect. Yuanshi initially attributes the forced listing of his disciples to Tongtian and later openly clashes with him over the Great Tribulation and the Jiepai Pass wager 16 114.
- Dao Ancestor Hongjun — Master and ultimate authority over the Saints. Hongjun reprimands Yuanshi for personal intervention and places the Six Saints under house arrest during the calamity 64.
- Empress Nuwa — Enemy after she protects Sanxiao and directly opposes him at Xi Qi. Their conflict becomes a full Saint-level battle until Hongjun intervenes 53 59 63.
- The Twelve Golden Immortals — Yuanshi's favored disciples and the foundation of the Heavenly Origin Sect. Their listing, crippling, and repeated defeats are central to his humiliation and later retaliation 2 118 136.
- Daoist Randeng — Deputy Sect Master of the Heavenly Origin Sect. Randeng secretly allies with Shen Zhaochi and targets Yuanshi's disciples, though Yuanshi later treats his failure alongside the Twelve Golden Immortals as grounds for reincarnation 12 118.
- Shen Zhaochi / Mister Shen — Hidden adversary who controls the true Investiture of the Gods, repeatedly disrupts Yuanshi's calculations, lists his disciples, and turns the Ten Thousand Immortals Great Array into a threat to the Heavenly Origin Sect 25 123 130.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Investiture of the Gods Anomaly
Yuanshi begins as a principal architect and expected beneficiary of the Great Tribulation. Shen Zhaochi's entry into the Investiture of the Gods overturns Yuanshi's presumed authority over the list and makes his disciples vulnerable to forced enfeoffment 2 3.
Loss of the Golden Immortals
Guangchengzi, Chijingzi, and True Lord Taiyi are listed under divine positions, provoking Yuanshi's fury. His effort to trace the cause behind later anomalies fails when Heavenly Secrets are obscured, leaving him injured and withdrawing the Heavenly Origin Sect from the calamity for a time 16 18 22 25.
Nine Bends Yellow River Conflict
Yuanshi personally attempts to destroy Sanxiao after their formation cripples his disciples. Taishang blocks his initial strike, while Nuwa repeatedly prevents him from killing the sisters; the escalating conflict ends only when Hongjun summons the Saints 44 45 62 63.
House Arrest and Renewed Suspicion
After Hongjun prohibits Saint intervention, Yuanshi returns to Kunlun humiliated and vows to settle accounts with Tongtian. When the Heavenly Origin Sect's fortune declines while the Intercepting Sect's rises, he discovers that Golden Ao Island contains a concealed power beyond his ability to investigate 64 66 100.
Jiepai Pass and the Ten Thousand Immortals Great Array
Yuanshi accepts Tongtian's Heavenly Dao-sealed wager to determine the calamity through a formation battle at Jiepai Pass. After learning that the Ten Thousand Immortals Great Array can strip immortals of cultivation and send their Primordial Spirits to the true Investiture of the Gods, he resolves to destroy it personally 114 123.
Breakdown and Final Countermeasures
Yuanshi attacks Shen Zhaochi's position with the Pangu Banner, but the formation's Annihilation Shield withstands his chaos sword qi. Shen Zhaochi's faith power then stabilizes the array and unsettles Yuanshi alongside the other Saints 124 130.
His humiliation eventually damages his Saint Heart, leaving silver streaks in his hair and pushing him toward self-destructive rage. Barred from direct action again, he equips the Twelve Golden Immortals with his finest treasures and orders them to fight for the Heavenly Origin Sect's remaining dignity 134 136.
Notable Quotes

“Today, I shall act on behalf of your Master to purge the sect and send you all onto the Investiture of the Gods!” 44
Trivia

- The true Investiture of the Gods is described as having a more fundamental and supreme aura than the version Yuanshi possesses 47.
- His repeated defeats and public humiliation visibly damage his Saint Heart, eventually causing silver hair to appear at his temples 136.
