Background / History

During the Nine-Tails’ attack on Konoha, he was under Sharingan control and rampaged through the village. Bai Yue temporarily bound him with Adamantine Sealing Chains, but once the Sharingan’s control was removed, Kurama regained clarity, thanked whoever had freed him, and shattered the chains through raw chakra and strength. 51

Minato Namikaze used the Reaper Death Seal against Kurama, taking away most of his chakra and dividing his existence. A portion of the Nine-Tails was subsequently transferred to Bai Yue, making Bai Yue his jinchūriki. 54 56 57

Kurama initially regarded Bai Yue with suspicion and hostility, but he recognized that Bai Yue neither feared nor hated him. Bai Yue gave him a spacious sealing world rather than a restrictive cage, though he also used seals to block Kurama’s perception of the outside world when necessary. 56 57 58

Their relationship began through constant teasing, arguments, and sparring in the sealing space. Bai Yue repeatedly overwhelmed Kurama through the sealing space’s constraints, then forcibly absorbed his chakra to attain Nine-Tails Chakra Mode. Over time, Kurama became willing to cooperate, allowing Bai Yue to activate the stronger Kurama Mode. 70 71 112

Bai Yue later arranged contact between Kurama’s Yin and Yang halves. The Yang half, sealed within Naruto, accepted the existence of the Yin half after their shared will confirmed it. Bai Yue proposed a temporary exchange of their positions, partly to investigate residual fragments of Kushina’s soul and recover more of Kurama’s lost chakra. 139

Appearance

Kurama is an enormous nine-tailed fox who can exist as both physical flesh and chakra. When his chakra is lent to a jinchūriki, it manifests as a black-and-red Tailed Beast cloak with growing tails. 51 57 152

Personality

Kurama is proud, sharp-tongued, and highly sensitive to humiliation. He frequently “bristles” at Bai Yue’s provocations, particularly when mocked for his laziness, lack of research ability, or defeats in the sealing space. 70 75 96

Despite calling himself the strongest of the Tailed Beasts, Kurama is notably lazy and has little interest in studying ninjutsu or bloodlines beyond his natural Tailed Beast Ball. He mocks Shukaku’s studious habits, though this partly reflects their longstanding rivalry. 70 71

His hostility comes largely from a history of being treated as a weapon or disaster. He holds particular resentment toward Hashirama and Madara for the circumstances that led to his imprisonment. Bai Yue’s unusual willingness to communicate with and trust him gradually gives Kurama a sense of comfort and belonging. 84 95
