Background / History

Jiraiya is a renowned Konoha shinobi and a disciple of the Third Hokage. His reputation in the village is inseparable from his status as one of the Three Ninja and his public notoriety as an inveterate bathhouse peeper. He insists that his voyeurism is merely “gathering material” for his novels. 161 162

He trained Minato Namikaze, whom he regarded as a beloved disciple, and later becomes Naruto’s instructor out of concern for Minato’s son. He had also taught Yahiko, Nagato, and Konan, providing them with foundational ninjutsu; their later emergence as the Akatsuki’s Six Paths of Pain deeply affects him. 159 226

His lecherous behavior often creates problems for both himself and Naruto. During their first meeting, Naruto mistakes him for a bathhouse peeper and attacks him; the two are subsequently beaten by enraged women. Jiraiya nevertheless shields Naruto from part of the assault, revealing a protective instinct beneath his antics. 160 161

Despite his recklessness, Jiraiya takes his students’ safety and the Akatsuki threat seriously. He is shaken by the discovery that Yahiko’s body bears Nagato’s Rinnegan, and he remains determined to stop his former students even after learning how dangerous they have become. 226 231

Jiraiya meets Naruto at a Konoha hot spring while gathering material for his writing. Their introduction devolves into a misunderstanding, a public beating, and Naruto’s use of the Sexy Jutsu. After seeing Naruto’s Nine-Tails chakra, Jiraiya suppresses it and agrees to train him. 160 161 162

He begins Naruto’s instruction with chakra control before promising to teach the Summoning Technique and Rasengan. His concern for Naruto is later acknowledged by Bai Yue, though Bai Yue clarifies that the Third Hokage—not Bai Yue—provided Naruto’s day-to-day care. 162 164

Evaluation of Bai Yue

When Bai Yue is considered as a possible Fifth Hokage, Jiraiya volunteers to test him after hearing that he had repelled Orochimaru. He visits the Hyuga compound, learns that the Caged Bird system has been reformed, and demands a one-on-one spar. 178 179

Jiraiya underestimates Bai Yue. His Fire Release, Needle Jizō, and hair techniques are effortlessly countered; Bai Yue seals his chakra, cuts off his hair, and threatens to keep him bald with additional seals. 179 180

Akatsuki and the Six Paths of Pain

Jiraiya intervenes when the Six Paths of Pain ambush Gaara, Temari, Kankuro, and Baki. He destroys Asura Path with an Ultra-Big Ball Rasengan and orders the others to retreat while he holds the enemy back. 226

During the confrontation, he recognizes Yahiko’s face and realizes that the Rinnegan belong to Nagato. Refusing to abandon his former students, he declares that he will stop them regardless of what they have endured. 226

After Gaara is recovered, Jiraiya intends to investigate Akatsuki alone. Bai Yue considers this suicidal, seals him to stop him from leaving, and later warns that a Flying Thunder God mark will be used to retrieve him if he attempts another unauthorized investigation. 231 232 242

Temporary Instructor and Root Infiltration

Bai Yue places Naruto, Sasuke, and Toneri under Jiraiya’s temporary instruction, much to Jiraiya’s reluctance. Bai Yue persuades him by suggesting Toneri may be the Child of Prophecy Jiraiya has sought for years. 276 277

Jiraiya later follows Sasuke and Toneri into Root, both to protect them and to settle his own grievances with Danzo. He uses Swamp of the Underworld against Root shinobi and assists Sasuke under pressure from Danzo’s forces. 302 303 304
