Personality
Sasuke is intensely driven by the need to become stronger, often prioritizing rapid growth over etiquette or established mentorship. During the Chunin Exams, he openly asks Baiyue to teach him despite Kakashi standing nearby, explaining that he wants strength “as soon as possible.” 150
His grief over his clan and fixation on Itachi deeply shape his actions. He is devastated by apparent losses of Naruto and Sakura, which Baiyue deliberately exploits to force his Mangekyō awakening. 188 189 After learning more about the massacre and killing Itachi, he becomes burdened by guilt and resolves to rebuild the Uchiha clan rather than simply pursue revenge. 223 228 254
Despite his coldness and bluntness, Sasuke remains attached to his companions. The prospect of Naruto dying causes him to panic, and he later recognizes that bonds with Naruto, Baiyue, Kakashi, Sakura, and others kept him from losing himself completely. 188 306
Abilities & Skills
Sharingan and Mangekyō Sharingan
Sasuke's Sharingan grants exceptional dynamic vision and develops rapidly under extreme emotional stress.
- His Double-Tomoe Sharingan lets him read Dosu Zaku's movements closely enough to compensate for ruptured eardrums. 149
- His Mangekyō Sharingan manifests after Baiyue's staged trauma scenario. 189
- He can summon Susanoo; its early skeletal form is torn apart by Baiyue, while a later version is still overwhelmed by Itachi's more developed Susanoo. 189 222
- He uses Amaterasu to incinerate Root shinobi during the assault on Danzo's base. 304
- Heavy ocular-technique use causes blood tears and strains his body. 222
- By the war against Madara, he has awakened the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan. 341
Chidori and Lightning Release
Kakashi teaches Sasuke Chidori at Baiyue's request, while Baiyue's Shadow Clone demonstrates a wider Chidori-derived arsenal to show him the potential of the technique. 158 160
- Uses Chidori to shatter Gaara's sand fortress. 168
- Learns that Chidori can develop into techniques such as Chidori Flow, Lightning Cutter, Chidori Sharp Spear, Lightning Sword, and other variants. 160
- Uses Chidori Raging Waves as a group attack against Root shinobi. 304
Fire Release and Taijutsu
Sasuke combines Uchiha Fire Release with close-combat techniques learned through Baiyue's influence.
- Uses Fire Style: Great Fireball Jutsu repeatedly in combat, including against Dosu Zaku and Root forces. 149 304
- Uses Baiyue's Exploding Palm to destroy Dosu's arm guard and severely injure his arm, leading Sasuke to recognize taijutsu's potential. 149
- His desire for broader combat options leads him to pursue training beyond conventional Uchiha techniques. 149 160
Curse Mark of Heaven
Orochimaru's Curse Mark of Heaven is placed on Sasuke, but Baiyue seals it so completely that it cannot function as Orochimaru's intended lure. 144 149
Relationships
- Hyuga Baiyue — Mentor and the person Sasuke respects most. Sasuke seeks Baiyue's training, receives techniques and guidance from him, and later carries out Baiyue's intended mission against Danzo. 150 172 302 306
- Uchiha Itachi — Older brother and central source of Sasuke's trauma. Sasuke initially seeks revenge, later learns the massacre was more complicated than he believed, and ultimately kills Itachi during the Land of Snow conflict. 219 223 228
- Uzumaki Naruto — Teammate and rival. Sasuke is emotionally shattered by Naruto's staged death, and later recognizes Naruto as one of the bonds that kept him from going mad. 188 306
- Haruno Sakura — Team 7 teammate. Her apparent death during Baiyue's staged scenario contributes to Sasuke's emotional collapse and Mangekyō awakening. 188 189
- Hatake Kakashi — Original Jonin instructor. Sasuke values Kakashi but seeks Baiyue's guidance for faster advancement; Kakashi later teaches him Chidori. 150 158
- Jiraiya — Later instructor alongside Naruto. Sasuke trains under him after Baiyue abandons the idea of sending Sasuke to Orochimaru. 254
- Otsutsuki Toneri — Fellow member of the later enhanced trio with Naruto. They accompany Jiraiya during the Root operation and are assigned together against Kaguya. 303 346
- Uzumaki Kushina — Friend of Sasuke's mother, Mikoto. Her recognition of him as Mikoto's child gives Sasuke a rare direct connection to his mother after the massacre. 239
Story Role / Major Arcs
Chunin Exams
Sasuke faces Dosu Zaku in the first match of the Chunin Exams. Although Dosu's sound techniques put him under severe pressure, Sasuke uses his Sharingan, Fire Release, and Exploding Palm to win and discovers a new appreciation for taijutsu. 149
Immediately afterward, he directly asks Baiyue to teach him. Baiyue instead arranges joint activities between Teams 7 and 8, while later directing Kakashi to teach Sasuke Chidori. 150 158
Mangekyō Awakening
Baiyue stages a false crisis involving injured and apparently murdered teammates to force Sasuke through the emotional trauma needed for a Mangekyō awakening. Sasuke manifests Mangekyō Sharingan and skeletal Susanoo, but Baiyue easily defeats him, heals his physical and mental injuries, and reveals the scenario was fabricated. 188 189
Land of Snow and Itachi's Death
During the Land of Snow conflict, Sasuke confronts Itachi as part of a larger battle against the Akatsuki. He deploys Mangekyō Sharingan and Susanoo, but Itachi's more advanced Susanoo overwhelms him before Baiyue destroys it with a Sky God Strike. 219 222
Baiyue later explains that the Uchiha massacre cannot be understood as a simple act committed by Itachi alone, prompting Sasuke to reconsider the clan's history and the role of the masked Uchiha who controlled the Nine-Tails. 223 224 225 Sasuke nevertheless kills Itachi before returning to Konoha, leaving him emotionally hollow and guilt-ridden. 228
Resolve to Restore the Uchiha
Following the aftermath of Itachi's death, Sasuke rejects the path of further instability and declares his intention to restore the Uchiha clan. Baiyue responds by emphasizing that Sasuke must continue living and live better. 254 256
Assault on Root
Believing Danzo to be Baiyue's intended target, Sasuke searches for Root's base and infiltrates it with Jiraiya and Toneri. 302 303 He cuts through Root shinobi with Chidori techniques, Fire Release, Susanoo, and Amaterasu before confronting Danzo directly. 304
Danzo's use of Izanagi initially frustrates Sasuke's attempts to kill him. After Danzo attempts to take Sasuke with him using the Reverse: Four Symbols Seal, Baiyue intervenes and saves Sasuke. 305 306
Fourth Shinobi World War
By the battle against Madara, Sasuke possesses the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan and attempts to join Toneri's fight against Madara. He is struck down before he can meaningfully enter the battle and is then possessed by Black Zetsu. 341
After Kaguya's revival, Baiyue frees Toneri from Infinite Tsukuyomi and orders Sasuke, Naruto, and Toneri to hold Kaguya off together. 346
