The Mountain God of Mount Langtou reveals that he entrusted Fuyao to Lin Jue at Empress Yaohua’s request. Lin Jue had encountered her beneath an ancient pine on Floating Hill Peak. The Mountain God calls her “Highness,” but Lin Jue continues to call her Fuyao 145 149.

Fuyao grows from a cub into Lin Jue’s regular traveling and fighting companion. She learns by absorbing a carefully selected trace of pure essence and spiritual energy from a defeated bear demon; Lin Jue recognizes this as the likely source of abilities she had acquired from other spirits 39 145. In the capital, he begins sending her to deal with minor demons and ghosts independently. Her earnings help cover their household expenses 309.

Appearance

Fuyao is a white fox with amber eyes and long, soft fur. She can appear as small as a cat or expand into a much larger fighting form 218 328 391.

Personality

Fuyao is curious, playful and quick to imitate Lin Jue. Her speech develops from repeated words into conversation, though she sometimes answers the question she wants to answer rather than the one asked. She also argues with Lin Jue over small matters, including holes she has dug in the yard 146 252 329 445.

She is protective of him and attentive in danger. She warns him of an incoming attack, helps him confront enemies, and becomes distressed when she cannot find any trace of him 143 393 573. Her mischief can be calculated: after recognizing two Deer Demons’ deception, she tricks them into fighting each other 360.
