Appearance
When first reunited with Lin Jue and Junior Sister in Ziyun County, Third Senior Brother is disguised as a disheveled, dejected middle-aged man in unwashed coarse linen. After changing, he returns to the image of an unrestrained Floating Hill Temple Daoist. 394 396
- Tall, with a stubbly beard and a weathered face. 394
- Usually wears an aged but clean Floating Hill Temple Daoist robe. 396
- Carries a small sword, a wine gourd, and often travels on horseback. 394 396
- Can shrink his small sword for convenient carrying. 396
Personality
Third Senior Brother is carefree, casual, and conspicuously unreliable in the eyes of his fellow disciples. He drinks, brews wine, procrastinates on cultivation, and treats serious conversations with teasing humor. 86 397 401
Beneath that laziness, he is clever, bold, and deeply chivalrous. He can devise elaborate infiltration schemes, but refuses to ignore monsters harming civilians merely to preserve those plans. 394 He also treats the remnant souls who choose to follow him as a responsibility, prioritizing proper vessels for them when he has the materials to make them. 403
His greatest fixation is Carve Beans into Soldiers. He pursues increasingly powerful Bean Soldiers—especially Dragon Kin vessels—with a dedication that surpasses Lin Jue's own interest in the art. 397 569
Abilities & Skills
Bean Soldiers / Carve Beans into Soldiers
Third Senior Brother's main cultivation is the Bean Soldiers method, a simplified inheritance of Scatter Beans to Soldiers. He scatters prepared beans to manifest armored soldiers and commands them in organized formations. 48 162
- Can summon large groups of armored Bean Soldiers from a handful of beans. 162
- Commands troops equipped with shields, sabers, spears, swords, and bows in battlefield formations. 409
- Possesses Hero Remnant Souls willing to serve him, though they require spiritual wood and other materials to receive proper bodies. 397 403
- Two of his three strongest Bean Soldiers were carved from rare spiritual wood. 85
- His Bean Soldiers' remnant souls are vulnerable to underworld divine pressure, prompting him to recall them against the City God's influence. 182
Dragon Kin Bean Soldiers
He considers Dragon Kin Bean Soldiers the ultimate pursuit of his cultivation method. Across a thousand years of the lineage, only four had previously been made, all during chaotic eras. 397
- Helped Lin Jue forge the armor and weapons for a Dragon Kin Bean Soldier, more than doubling the work's speed. 397
- Designed a mountain-splitting axe for Lin Jue's Dragon Kin Bean Soldier and helped equip it with heavy scale-like armor. 403
- Later recruits multiple Dragon Giant remnant souls to refine into his own Bean Soldiers. 569
- Dragon Kin vessels are exceptionally labor-intensive: their immense size, armor, and weapons require extensive ritual refinement and power. 409
Swordsmanship and Combat
Third Senior Brother is regarded as highly skilled and clever in combat. He fights directly when needed despite his preference for a relaxed life. 222 397
- Uses a greatsword capable of releasing Sword Qi. 409
- Led more than a hundred Bean Soldiers against demons besieging the Dragon Kin Bean Soldier. 409
- Fought the Water Demon underwater for nearly fifteen minutes. 90
- Attacked the Eight-tentacled Sea Demon with his sword, Divine Speed Technique, and armored Yakshas, but was unable to defeat it alone. 565
Divine Speed Technique
He begins learning the Divine Speed Technique after reuniting with Lin Jue and Junior Sister in Ziyun County. 399 403
- Uses the technique in battle against the Eight-tentacled Sea Demon. 565
- Is repeatedly urged by Junior Sister to cultivate it more diligently. 401
- His progress is hindered by his habit of drinking and avoidance of sustained meditation. 401
Forging and Craftsmanship
Third Senior Brother is an accomplished craftsman whose Bean Soldier practice includes carving, forging, consecration, and ritual refinement. 85 397
- Forged spiritual gold into armor plates for Lin Jue's Dragon Kin Bean Soldier. 397
- Crafted weapons suited to a Dragon Kin's fighting habits, including a sharp axe to complement its metal whip. 403
- Uses materials such as spiritual wood and spiritual gold to create vessels for Hero Remnant Souls. 403
Equipment
- Greatsword — Used in direct combat and to release Sword Qi. 409
- Small sword — A sword gifted by Divine Lord Fu Chi, which Third Senior Brother has shrunk for carrying. 396
- Wine gourd — A constant companion reflecting his drinking habit. 396
- Horse — Used during his years of travel through the jianghu. 394
- Jade Horse — Chosen during the division of captured treasures, having long envied Lin Jue's Paper Donkey. 416
- Armored Yakshas — Bean Soldier forces forged from the Queen Mother of the East's remains. 565
Relationships
- Lin Jue — Junior brother. Third Senior Brother taught him the Bean Soldiers technique, respects his aptitude, and accepts the Greater Yin Yang Method from him rather than continuing his dangerous scheme against the Queen Mother of the East. 396 394
- Junior Sister — Junior sister. She presses him to learn the Divine Speed Technique diligently and assists with his Greater Yin Yang Method study. 399 401
- Floating Hill Temple Senior Brothers — Fellow disciples. Though he often disappears without correspondence, he remains part of the group's mutual support network and answers Lin Jue's request for help in Ziyun County. 381 397
- Queen Mother of the East — Demon King whom he sought to infiltrate in order to obtain the Greater Yin Yang Method, longevity arts, and other cultivation methods. 381 394
- Dragon Giant remnant souls — Prospective subordinates and companions. He recruits several after the Eight-tentacled Sea Demon's defeat to continue his Bean Soldier pursuit. 564 569
Background / History
Early Travels
Third Senior Brother descends Mount Yi alongside Lin Jue and Junior Sister to eliminate demons and gain experience. At Little Stream Village, his Bean Soldiers method proves poorly suited to fighting Yin Ghosts, but he still helps investigate the villagers' injuries and confront the threat. 48
During later journeys, he protects his companions with practical priorities and battlefield judgment. When a Water Demon threatens to overturn their boat, he entrusts Lin Jue with protecting Brother Donkey over their supplies, then enters the water to fight the demon himself. 89 90 He also uses Bean Soldiers to intimidate bandits into abandoning their extortion attempt. 162
Wandering Years
Third Senior Brother disappears unexpectedly while traveling with Lin Jue and Junior Sister, taking his horse and belongings with him. 199 In the following years, he roams the jianghu; at one point, he is reported to have been urgently pursued by a female ghost. 259
His absence becomes a concern when Lin Jue begins gathering the scattered Floating Hill Temple disciples to cultivate the Greater Yin Yang Method together. Third Senior Brother's location is unknown, with his fellow disciples speculating that he is either traveling or has run away. 349
Pursuit of the Queen Mother of the East
In a letter sent to Mount Yi, Third Senior Brother reveals that he is pursuing the Queen Mother of the East, hoping to obtain her longevity arts and a path to true enlightenment. 381
He spends months scouting Ziyun County and plans to infiltrate the demon's followers, either blending in with a fleeing crowd or allowing himself to be captured and taken to Mount Modu. He intends to intervene if the demon's forces threaten civilians, regardless of the risk to his scheme. 394
Lin Jue and Junior Sister recognize him before he can execute the plan. After learning that Lin Jue has already acquired the Greater Yin Yang Method, he abandons the infiltration attempt and accepts cultivation methods suited to him. 394
Defense of Ziyun County
Third Senior Brother assists Lin Jue in forging the Dragon Kin Bean Soldier's armor and weapons, working as the group's reluctant but highly effective laborer. 397 403
During the defense of Ziyun County, he leads over a hundred Bean Soldiers—including armored Yakshas—into battle against the demon forces. 409 He also begins cultivating the Greater Yin Yang Method and Divine Speed Technique, though Junior Sister finds his progress insufficiently diligent. 399 401
Dragon Kin Country
After sailing overseas in search of Dragon Kin, Third Senior Brother reaches the Dragon Kin Country and infiltrates a Demon King's palace to help the remnant souls of slain Dragon Giants. 563 564
He launches an attack on the Eight-tentacled Sea Demon with his Bean Soldiers, sword, and Divine Speed Technique, but the True Immortal sea demon overwhelms him and prevents him from rescuing its captives. 565 Lin Jue, Junior Sister, and their allies subsequently arrive and eliminate the Sea Demon. 566
Following the victory, Third Senior Brother recruits several Dragon Giant remnant souls, intending to create bodies for them through his perfected Bean Soldier craft. 569

Trivia
