Background / History
Rosinante was born into the Donquixote family, which lived in Mary Geoise as Celestial Dragons. His father, Donquixote Homingo, renounced the family’s status and privileges to live among ordinary people. Without their former protection, the family suffered retaliation, poverty, and the death of Rosinante’s mother from illness 259.
Doflamingo blamed their father for these losses and killed him despite Rosinante’s pleas. Mary Geoise refused to readmit the brothers. Rosinante eventually left Doflamingo, was adopted by Sengoku, and joined the Navy 259.
After Vergo infiltrated the Navy, Rosinante returned to the Donquixote Family as a Navy mole, taking the position of Second Corazon. He pretended to be mute and acted hostile toward children to discourage them from remaining with the crew 259 306.
Law resisted these attempts because of his desire for revenge. Recognizing the same resentment that had consumed Doflamingo, Rosinante resolved to save him. He explained the significance of “D,” persuaded Law to leave the family, and spent months searching for a treatment for his Lead Disease 259.
Appearance
- Build: Tall 259.
- Clothing: A black feather coat and purple clown hood 305.
- Recurring accessory: Frequently carries or smokes cigarettes 263 272 305.
Personality
Rosinante’s strongest commitment is to Law’s survival and freedom. He risks returning to Doflamingo’s sphere of influence to obtain the Op-Op Fruit, accepts cooperation on almost any terms if Law can eat it, and openly rejects the possibility of Law following Doflamingo’s path 259 271 306.
His apparent cruelty toward children is a protective act rather than genuine dislike. Once away from the Donquixote Family, he encourages Law to enjoy himself, welcomes the prospect of him finding friends his own age, and playfully pushes him to relax 259 272 329.
Despite his undercover experience, Rosinante is conspicuously clumsy. He trips during successful thefts, accidentally ignites his coat while smoking, and even knocks himself unconscious during an escape. He often tries to laugh off these mishaps, continuing to make every effort before accepting the outcome 270 274 360.
He also distinguishes official allegiance from personal gratitude. He praises the Revolutionary Army’s protection of Dressrosa despite his Navy position, then continues traveling with its allies to repay the favors he and Law received 303 316.
Abilities & Skills
Silence-Silence Fruit
- Soundproof barrier: Creates an invisible barrier that isolates sounds from inside and outside 260.
- Targeted silence: Removes sound from designated people or objects, including himself, gunfire, and rocket launchers 260.
- Stealth: Uses silent movement for infiltration, theft, and undercover work 260 269.
- Sound suppression: Cancels Uta’s piercing noise during the casino brawl. His silence also causes his own “melody” to disappear, letting him evade her Sing-Sing Fruit ability during gambling 260.
- Coordinated attacks: Silences Kuma’s compressed-air bomb until it reaches its destination and suppresses Leo’s movements during an infiltration 278 279.
- Limits: Soundproofing does not make him invisible. Falls and other mishaps can interrupt his active ability 270 274 291.
- Detection: His soundproof barrier blocks Observation Haki detection in the shipboard encounter, but Crocodile detects his conversation through sand vibrations 319.
Rokushiki
- Soru: Uses high-speed movement to evade Kuma’s attacks, retreat from Crocodile, and attempt to catch up with the group at Punk Hazard 263 291 360.
- Training: Has a basic understanding of several Rokushiki techniques from his Navy background; mastery of all six is not established 332.
- Practical weakness: His speed does not prevent accidental falls—one Soru-assisted dash ends with him striking a metal door and losing consciousness 360.
Knife Combat
- Close combat: Blocks blades and rapidly cuts down hostile pirates with a small knife 303.
- Thrown attacks: Throws a dagger at a powerful pirate watching the Dressrosa battle 303.
- Defensive use: Attempts to block Doflamingo’s threads with a dagger, but is overpowered 305.
Espionage and Gambling
- Intelligence gathering: Supplies information that helps Tsuru pursue the Donquixote Family and informs Scarlet and Kyros about its strength and deployment 272 319.
- Undercover disguise: Maintains the pretense that he is mute for years 306.
- Cheating: Combines practiced gambling tricks with silent movement to win consecutive matches and earn one billion Beli 260.
- Card tracking: Gives Law a special contact lens that reveals a faint fluorescent mark placed on a card 264.
