Background / History

Vegapunk was born on the mechanical island of Baljimoa. A genius from childhood, he produced hundreds of valuable invention blueprints and designed a land-heating system to alleviate his hometown's severe cold; its construction failed from lack of funding and manpower, which deeply upset him. 340

He later led MADS, also called the Peace Institute, a research group funded by Du Feld. Vegapunk and Vinsmoke Judge discovered the Lineage Factor, while Caesar Clown, Judge, and Queen pursued weapon research. The World Government deemed MADS' work too dangerous, arrested Vegapunk, absorbed him and Caesar into the Navy's science division, and confiscated or destroyed the group's creations. 313

With World Government funding, Vegapunk established a research institute on Punk Hazard. He expelled Caesar after Caesar persisted in poison-gas and mass-destruction research, then expanded the institute across the island into the top-secret Future Laboratory. 341

Vegapunk secretly studied materials saved from Ohara and learned of the Void Century, the erased ancient kingdom, Ancient Machines, and the connection between historical mysteries, Devil Fruits, power sources, and Ancient Weapons. Knowing this research would eventually lead the World Government to erase him, he activated his old contingency plan through Unit G-7 and sought to escape Punk Hazard. 342 343

During the Punk Hazard Incident, Caesar activated an Ancient Machine Vegapunk had restored, unleashing copy robots throughout the Future Laboratory. Vegapunk allied with Lindsey's group, explained the threat, and led efforts to destroy or evade the machines while preparing his escape. 346 347

After the Future Laboratory self-destructed, Vegapunk escaped aboard an Ancient Ship with his clones. The group subsequently reached Egghead, where the Vegapunks continued gathering ancient technology and began building their envisioned “Island of the Future.” 374 432 436

Appearance

Vegapunk is a thin, small-framed elderly man whose enormous head is disproportionately larger than his body—at times nearly as tall as a Giant. His brain growth severely impairs his movement. 340 341

  • Mottled black-and-white, extremely messy hair. 340
  • Dirty white laboratory coat. 340
  • Habitually protrudes a tongue that nearly reaches his belly. 340
  • Uses a modified G-7 mechanical wheelchair to move when his head becomes too cumbersome. 340
  • Later wears an apple-shaped helmet over his headless true body after separating his brain. 363

Personality

Vegapunk is kind, generous, and fundamentally driven by improving lives. His early attempt to heat Baljimoa and his dream of freely shared energy both stem from his belief that science can reduce suffering and end wars. 340 358

His curiosity is relentless. He willingly investigates forbidden history, ancient machines, Devil Fruits, and even Lindsey's anomalous powers despite knowing that this knowledge places him in danger from the World Government. He sees science not as an opponent to imagination or the supernatural, but as a means of understanding them. 342 349 362

Despite his eccentricity and frequent absent-mindedness, Vegapunk adapts quickly under pressure. When the Copy Clone Machine overwhelmed Punk Hazard, he revised the unfinished Punk Record plan in real time, dividing his own brain to create six assistants. 362 363

Abilities & Skills

Brain-Brain Fruit

Vegapunk consumed the Brain-Brain Fruit, becoming a “Brain Person” capable of infinitely storing acquired knowledge. His accumulated memories cause his brain—and therefore his head—to grow continuously. 341

  • Gives him an unmatched database of scientific, historical, and technical knowledge. 341 343
  • Allows him to retain Ohara's recovered research and continue studying it. 343
  • His expanding brain eventually became large enough to obstruct mobility. 340 342
  • A replica with the same ability, Unit A-0, overloaded and suffered a brain explosion because its mechanical body could not bear the fruit's load. 364 365

Scientific Genius and Engineering

Vegapunk is recognized as the world's greatest scientist, possessing technology described as five hundred years ahead of the present era. 340

  • Created the artificial biological weapon Punk Dragon as a Punk Hazard defense measure. 4
  • Developed methods allowing objects to consume Devil Fruits, which he described as a discovery rather than an invention. 3 344
  • Designed Unit G-7, a toy-grade assembled robot whose disguised blueprints were hidden within a large sniper-rifle design. 341
  • Built the Future Laboratory, including artificial cloud flooring, autonomous machines, defense systems, and the Doomsday Shelter. 341 352
  • Created the Pacifista project and named it to honor Bartholomew Kuma's stated will; he participated only after the Five Elders coerced Kuma through Bonney's treatment. 252
  • Developed the technique behind the Mother Seed to convert energy into power, intending to make energy freely available; the World Government weaponized its prototype instead. 358 373

Lineage Factor Research

Vegapunk and Judge discovered the Lineage Factor, which Vegapunk describes as the “blueprint of life” containing an organism's body, personality, thoughts, and Devil Fruit abilities. 313 347

  • Identifies blood, hair, saliva, and sweat as usable sources for Lineage Factor analysis. 347
  • Concluded that Lineage Factors could theoretically enable mass production of an individual or artificial Devil Fruits. 349
  • Used this theory to explain the Copy Clone Machine's ability to create replicas from collected biological and combat data. 346 347
  • Hypothesized that Devil Fruits are manifestations of humanity's desire for evolution and altered cognition. 349

Ancient Technology Expertise

Vegapunk studies and restores technologies from the ancient era, though he repeatedly acknowledges that their upper limits and power sources remain beyond his full understanding. 342 346

  • Restored and named the Copy Clone Machine, an Ancient Machine that creates evolving replicas from collected data. 346
  • Determined that the machine could initially produce only one high-level replica at a time because of energy limitations. 347
  • Investigated the unknown power source that once drove ancient robots and may also power the Ancient Weapons. 342 344
  • Recognized and operated the Ancient Ship assembled by Unit A-0, including charging it after A-3 was forced into its energy core. 373 374
  • Identified the Ancient Ship as a “Wish Ship” that travels toward the strongest desire among its passengers. 375

Punk Record R&D Operation and the Vegapunks

Vegapunk originally planned to store his detached brain in a warehouse and employ six clones representing facets of his personality. During the Punk Hazard crisis, he improvised the process with Law's Op-Op Fruit and Lindsey's Monkey Talisman. 363

Clone Represented Element
Shaka Justice
Lilith Evil
Edison Thought
Pythagoras Wisdom
Atlas Rage
York Desire
  • Law divided Vegapunk's brain into six pieces; the Monkey Talisman transformed each piece into a humanoid clone. 362 363
  • The clones and original body are parts of one person, eliminating the need for normal signal synchronization. 363
  • Injury to one clone causes pain to all of them. 363
  • The seven Vegapunks coordinated manually to regain sections of the Future Laboratory from the copy robots. 363

Equipment / Creations

  • Unit G-7 — Old MADS robot programmed to seek help in extracting Vegapunk from the Navy; Vegapunk converted it into a mechanical wheelchair. 341
  • Future Laboratory — Punk Hazard research complex expanded across the island and equipped with advanced technology. 341
  • Doomsday Shelter — Reinforced shelter intended to resist the copy robots. 352
  • Punk Dragon — Artificial dragon-type biological weapon used as a defensive measure on Punk Hazard. 4
  • Light Pressure Gloves — One of several inventions demonstrated during the Future Laboratory tour. 344
  • Auto Dress-Up Machine — Machine used to equip the six Vegapunk clones. 344 363

Relationships

  • Aiven Lindsey — Ally and intellectual counterpart during the Punk Hazard Incident. Lindsey's theories on imagination and Devil Fruits inspired Vegapunk, and his Monkey Talisman enabled the creation of the six Vegapunks. 349 362 363
  • Sentomaru — Adopted by Vegapunk after being ostracized for his violent strength; serves as Vegapunk's devoted bodyguard. 345
  • Kizaru — Longtime friend and associate. Their friendship is strained by Kizaru's duties as a Marine Admiral and Vegapunk's attempted escape from the World Government. 351 358 375
  • Nico Robin — Fellow seeker of forbidden history. Vegapunk shared what he learned from Ohara's documents and confirmed that the Giant who saved them survived. 343
  • Monkey D. Dragon — Old acquaintance who repeatedly invited Vegapunk to join the Revolutionary Army; Vegapunk initially declined because Dragon lacked the resources for advanced research. 343
  • Bartholomew Kuma — Friend whose treatment of Bonney became leverage for the World Government to force Kuma into the Pacifista project. 252
  • Caesar Clown — Former MADS colleague and later subordinate in the Navy science division. Vegapunk expelled Caesar over his poison-gas and mass-destruction research. 313 346
  • Shaka, Lilith, Edison, Pythagoras, Atlas, and York — Six humanoid divisions of Vegapunk's own brain and personality. 363
