Background
Tathagata is the ruler of Spirit Mountain and the central authority of Western Heaven, presiding over the Thirty Thousand Buddhas, Arhats, Vajras, and Bodhisattvas. He is responsible for advancing the Buddhist Sect's fortune through the Journey to the West and the eastward spread of Buddhist teachings. 438 598
He was formerly known as Duobao Daoren, a name publicly used by the Grand Supreme Elder during their confrontation at Great Thunderclap Monastery. Although Tathagata commands Western Heaven in practice, Amitabha's Dharma decrees supersede his authority. 592 704
Appearance
Tathagata commonly appears as a solemn Buddha seated upon a Lotus Throne, surrounded by vast golden Buddha Light.
- Possesses a Sixteen-Foot Golden Body with snail-shell curls and a kasaya. 436 617
- Bears a dimming Merit Golden Wheel behind his head when exerting his Buddhist power. 441
- His Dharma manifestations are immense, dignified, and capable of projecting overwhelming Buddhist intent. 617
Personality
Tathagata carefully maintains a dignified, compassionate public image even when enraged or humiliated. When Lin Zhu's supporters made retaliation too costly, he immediately framed his withdrawal as Buddhist mercy rather than admitting strategic defeat. 500
He is calculating and deeply invested in the Journey to the West as Western Heaven's path to revival. He is willing to surrender treasures, distribute Merit, suppress dissent, and order military action when he believes the plan is threatened. 479 480 633
Repeated failures leave him increasingly strained. He is capable of caution—refusing to rashly confront Lin Zhu when he suspects hidden backing—but can become desperate enough to contemplate slaughter and war. 448 588 633
