Background / History

Founding as the Western Sect

Daoist Zhunti and Daoist Jieyin established the Western Sect on Mount Sumeru after witnessing the Three Pure Ones attain Sainthood through founding sects. Their stated purpose was to revitalize the West and enlighten its living beings. The Heavenly Dao initially granted them insufficient Merit; only after making forty-nine great vows did they attain the Saint Position. 4

“Today, we establish the Western Sect upon Mount Sumeru, for the purpose of revitalizing the west and enlightening the living beings of the west.” 4

After the Wu-Yao Calamity, the sect failed to obtain Merit but absorbed some Demon Race members, expanding its ranks. Its disciples continued to be instructed by the two Western Saints; Yaoshi entered the Early Quasi-Saint Realm after severing one corpse, while Ksitigarbha reached the peak of the Daluo Realm. 109

Eastern Expansion

Western Heaven sought influence beyond the West, particularly among the rising Human Race. Maitreya and Amitabha attempted to accept the reincarnated Human Emperor as a disciple, but he rejected them after recognizing their hidden agenda. 118

During the Investiture of the Gods conflict, Western Heaven's arrangements were repeatedly disrupted by the Jie Sect and Chan Sect. Yaoshi Buddha regarded this as a major obstacle to the sect's intended eastward return and enlightenment of the masses. 359

According to the Jade Emperor's account, Western Heaven became the strongest force between Heaven and Earth after the Investiture of the Gods, then advanced into Southern Jambudvipa through the Journey to the West. 451

Spirit Mountain

Spirit Mountain is Western Heaven's holy land and the site of the Great Thunderclap Monastery. It is described as possessing profound foundations and a serene Buddhist atmosphere before the later conflicts devastated much of the area. 497 693

• Great Thunderclap Monastery — The heart of Spirit Mountain and a central symbol of Western Heaven's Buddhist foundation. It was heavily damaged when the Purple Gold Dragon Emperor destroyed the Three Thousand Buddhas Dharma Net with a tail strike. 666

Major Conflicts

Conflict with Lin Zhu

Western Heaven's actions in the Human Realm, including crossing borders and harming mortals, brought Lin Zhu into direct opposition with the Buddhist Sect. He further accused Western Heaven of responsibility for the demonic contamination of Golden Cicada Child's True Spirit. 497

After Lin Zhu slew Bodhisattva Weituo, Maitreya attacked him, while Lin Zhu used the God-Slaying Spear and Heavenly Origin Demonic Stone to plunge Western Heaven into chaos. The resulting Demonic Qi contaminated Spirit Mountain and damaged the Great Thunderclap Monastery. 499

The Great Heavenly Venerate's warning forced Tathagata and the Thirty Thousand Buddhas to avoid further direct action against Lin Zhu, lest the Journey to the West be annulled and Western Heaven face punishment. 499 500

Yaoshi Buddha later attempted to kill Lin Zhu with the Glazed Illusionary Light. The attack devastated a thousand-mile region and destroyed the Auspicious Cloud Golden Lamp and Merit Golden Lotus's protection, but the Jade Emperor intervened with Inverting Yin and Yang to save him. 626

Dragon Clan Crisis

White Lotus Boy ordered Indra to torture Li Jing to death, then ordered Ao Lie's execution. After Ao Lie was beheaded, White Lotus Boy crushed his primordial spirit, severing Western Heaven's ties with the Dragon Clan. 664

The Nine True Dragons subsequently attacked Spirit Mountain. The Purple Gold Dragon Emperor shattered the Three Thousand Buddhas Dharma Net and severely damaged the Great Thunderclap Monastery, while the remaining Buddhist forces struggled to hold their defenses. 666 678

Amitabha descended from the Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss and agreed to the Dragon Emperor's demands that White Lotus Boy be handed over and that Western Heaven find a way to resurrect Ao Lie. 667

Loss of Spirit Mountain's Resources

While Western Heaven and the Dragon Clan fought, Lin Zhu infiltrated Spirit Mountain under the concealment of the Sky-Covering Talisman. He searched the Great Thunderclap Monastery, the Wish-Fulfilling Corridor, and the Eight Treasures Merit Pool for treasures. 678 684

After the Dragon Clan withdrew, Western Heaven discovered that the Wish-Fulfilling Corridor had been stripped of valuable materials and that the Merit Pool had been emptied and damaged. The loss threatened the material support system sustaining much of Western Heaven's Buddhist hierarchy. 703 705

Lin Zhu later returned with Spirit Mountain materials, including Spirit Source Agate and Glazed Crystal Bricks, intending to use them in the Ninth Heaven Prison's Enforcement Hall. 711
