Background and History

Heavenly Court ambitions

Di Jun rules the Demon Race alongside Taiyi, seeking to gather powerful demon cultivators beneath the Heavenly Court. He considers Kunpeng's recruitment a major gain and supports naming him Demon Master. His ultimate ambition is to unify the Primordial Era and attain Sainthood. 6 26

He repeatedly uses titles, offices, and promises of future enlightenment to recruit talent. When Kunpeng's allies refuse him, Di Jun offers them the positions of the Four Great Emperors, but their loyalty to Jiang Ping outweighs any status offered by the Heavenly Court. 27

First contact with Jiang Ping's courtyard

Di Jun and Taiyi arrive ostentatiously at Kunpeng's dojo in an imperial carriage drawn by phoenixes and dragon-horses, intending to formalize Kunpeng's position. Their display provokes Kunpeng and the other protectors, who fear they will disturb Jiang Ping. 26

After being forced down by Kunpeng, Kong Xuan, White Tiger, Jade Qilin, and the Golden-Winged Great Peng, Di Jun chooses negotiation over escalation. He is nonetheless driven to attempt seizing Jiang Ping himself before realizing that the courtyard's defenders are all Quasi-Saints near their peak. 27 28

Di Jun later enters the courtyard in his Three-legged Golden Crow form. Jiang Ping mistakes him and Taiyi for “three-legged chickens,” strikes them for refusing their feed, and eventually has them eat spiritual roots and Dao-bearing food. Di Jun abandons his dignity as Demon Emperor to consume the meal. 29 31

Pursuit of the courtyard's opportunities

Recognizing the value of Jiang Ping's food and teachings, Di Jun and Taiyi bring selected Demon Race members to the courtyard for opportunities. They first bring four demons, then return with twelve additional relatives, straining Jiang Ping's willingness to feed them all. 32 35

Di Jun remains wary of Jiang Ping's hidden power. When Jiang Ping offers to mediate the Witch–Demon conflict, Di Jun initially believes their identities and deception have been discovered; even a pat on the shoulder leaves him terrified. 169 170

During the construction of Jiang Ping's residence, Di Jun supplies tools and workers for the Demon Race. He becomes frustrated when the Witch Clan finishes far faster using the tools Jiang Ping gave them, then unsuccessfully attempts to use those same tools himself. 67 70 77

Conflict with the Witch Clan and Western Sect

After Houtu kills two Demon Race generals near the Immeasurable Mountain Range, Di Jun uses the incident to pressure the Witch Clan and sends troops against a Witch Clan tribe beneath Buzhou Mountain. 45 52

His rivalry with the Witch Clan extends even to Jiang Ping's leftovers: Di Jun races Dijiang back to the courtyard to claim a pot of soup and remaining food, treating them as valuable resources for the Demon Race. 87 88

When Jiang Ping is taken to Spirit Mountain by Jieyin and Zhunti, Di Jun joins the effort to recover him. He and Taiyi attack Spirit Mountain with the Chaos Bell and Di Jun's Witch Slaying Sword, but fail to breach its great array. 133 135

Later preparations

Di Jun learns farming and fragrant-rice cultivation directly from Jiang Ping, mastering transplanting, fertilizing, weeding, pest control, and harvesting alongside Taiyi over several years. He later demonstrates these skills to the Ten Great Demon Sages with a Time Reversal Pearl. 181 184

As tensions rise again, Di Jun and Taiyi recruit male immortals into the Heavenly Court. They are prepared to use these recruits as expendable forces in a future war with the Witch Clan, viewing conflict as part of their path toward proving the Dao. 165

Personality

Di Jun is intensely ambitious, viewing the consolidation of the Demon Race as the route to both dominance and Sainthood. He habitually frames recruitment as a grand cause and offers lofty titles to those whose strength he wants for the Heavenly Court. 26 27

He is also pragmatic. When Kunpeng's group proves stronger than expected, Di Jun abandons direct confrontation in favor of persuasion; when the courtyard's food and teachings reveal their worth, he sets aside imperial pride to obtain them. 27 31

His rivalry with the Witch Clan makes him suspicious, competitive, and easily frustrated. He assumes Xuanming favors Houtu during the construction contest and is humiliated when the Witch Clan's tools refuse to benefit the Demon Race. 76 77

Despite his arrogance elsewhere, Di Jun is extremely cautious before Jiang Ping. He interprets even casual remarks as possible judgments from an unfathomable master and carefully avoids exposing his true identity. 32 170
