Tongtian elevated Lin Chuan directly from an outer disciple to a personal disciple, bypassing the inner-sect rank. The abrupt promotion caused widespread resentment on Golden Ao Island, particularly from Zhao Gongming, who expected an explanation for being passed over. Tongtian kept Lin Chuan close because he suspected that Lin Chuan possessed unusual knowledge of future calamities 3 5.

Lin Chuan initially treated his new status as a burden. He repeatedly attempted to slack off, provoke Tongtian, or otherwise make himself undesirable enough to be expelled from the Sect of Interception.
