Background / History
Yuanshi is one of the Three Pure Ones and the second brother of Laozi and Tongtian. His early encounter with Qingyi Mountain God Qin Yun establishes a lasting hostility: after attempting to attack the spirits in Qin Yun's temple, Yuanshi is suppressed by the temple's power and later struck by his own rebounding palm imprint. He responds by insulting the temple spirits and attempting to kill them. 26
His rivalry with Qin Yun intensifies as Tongtian accepts Qin Yun's guidance and gifts. Yuanshi distrusts the Great Dao Origins Qin Yun gives Tongtian, arguing that Qin Yun must have ulterior motives and demanding that Tongtian return the items; Laozi ultimately permits Tongtian to keep them. 121 123
Yuanshi repeatedly falls behind people he considers beneath him. He damages his origin while trying unsuccessfully to match Hongyun's Eleven-Petal Bloom, is defeated by Qin Yun after attacking him at the Three Pure Ones' training ground, and loses a contest for Fangzhang Immortal Island to Donghuang Taiyi's refined Chaos Bell. 55 117 175
After becoming a Saint, Yuanshi continues to confront Qin Yun and pressure Tongtian to sever ties with him. He later becomes Sect Master of the Chan Teachings, but the deaths of disciples Taiyi Zhenren and Chijingzi deepen his hostility toward the Sect of Interception and the Twelve Ancestral Witches. 262 267 417 425
Personality
Yuanshi is exceptionally proud, status-conscious, and unwilling to concede inferiority. He views Qin Yun's generosity toward Tongtian as an insult to the dignity of the Three Pure Ones, even when the gifts demonstrably benefit Tongtian. 121 123
His anger is frequently impulsive and destructive. He threatens weaker temple spirits, attacks onlookers after being mocked by the Demon Race, and unleashes Saintly pressure across Kunlun Mountain when enraged. 26 175 266
He is also deeply suspicious of Qin Yun and resentful of Tongtian's association with him. Yuanshi interprets Tongtian's acceptance of Great Dao Origins and guidance as potential betrayal, creating a persistent strain between the brothers. 107 122 251 267
