Background / History

The Heavenly Dao was one of the three Daos born after Pangu opened heaven and earth, alongside the Earthly Dao and Human Dao. The three were initially meant to progress together, but the Heavenly Dao formed a partnership with Hongjun, made him its spokesperson, and suppressed the Earthly and Human Daos until it became the dominant force of the Primordial World 7 169 223.

It governed the world through fate, karma, order, and the Primordial Origin of Heavenly Dao. Its authority could recognize emerging powers: it bestowed Heavenly Dao Merit and destiny upon Sun Wukong's Heavenly Demon Country, formally acknowledging the country's existence 137. It also regarded the resurgence of the Human Dao as a direct threat and sought to suppress Ying Zheng after his ascension 228 229.

Search for Daoist Lingxuan

When Hongjun warned of Yang Mei's return, the Heavenly Dao pressured him to correct his earlier decision to spare Yang Mei during the Dao-Demon Conflict. It used Hongjun's guilt to send him after Yang Mei and promised support if necessary 170.

The Heavenly Dao subsequently deployed the Heavenly Dao Chessboard to search the Primordial World for the unidentified threat. The board identified Daoist Lingxuan, but the deduction immediately backfired; the Heavenly Dao was hurled from the Primordial Continent into Chaos and injured by the backlash 170.

Fearing that Lingxuan might surpass its control, the Heavenly Dao became determined to find and eliminate him. It followed the Great Dao's gaze to Lingxuan Dao Field, convinced that Lingxuan had been hiding because he was weaker 241 246.

Defeat and abdication

The Heavenly Dao entered Lingxuan Dao Field in person and threatened to kill Sun Wukong, Ying Zheng, Zhao Gongming, and the Human Dao Incarnation. Its confidence collapsed after it discovered the strength of the assembled cultivators and received a single indifferent glance from Zhou Xuan 246.

When it attacked, Zhou Xuan casually flicked a finger. The resulting strike erased the avatar's defenses and annihilated it, while also injuring the Heavenly Dao's main body. Although the avatar later re-condensed, it became terrified of Zhou Xuan and sought aid from the Great Dao 247. The Great Dao refused to intervene, admitting it did not dare provoke Lingxuan 248.

Realizing that Zhou Xuan's disciples—including Sun Wukong, Ying Zheng, Zhao Gongming, Yang Mei, Beginning Qilin, Yuan Feng, and the Human Dao Incarnation—each bore grievances against it, the Heavenly Dao chose self-preservation. It summoned Hongjun, exposed his long-standing plan to replace it, and transferred its authority through the Primordial Origin of Heavenly Dao Chessboard 249 250.

Life at Lingxuan Dao Field

After Hongjun inherited the Heavenly Dao position, the white-haired incarnation returned to Lingxuan Dao Field and offered the true Primordial Origin of Heavenly Dao Roulette to Zhou Xuan in exchange for its life. Zhou Xuan remained indifferent to the offer, and the former Heavenly Dao eventually admitted regret for its past actions 251 253 254.

Zhou Xuan sentenced it to teach every cultivation method, Law, and piece of Dao comprehension it possessed to the Dao Field's disciples without reservation. The Heavenly Dao accepted and became Lingxuan Dao Field's instructor 255.

After teaching for three thousand years, it reported on the disciples' cultivation and Law comprehension to Zhou Xuan. It later requested permission to remain at the Dao Field rather than return to the Primordial World, partly to avoid conflict with Zhou Xuan's disciples and pets; Zhou Xuan allowed it to stay 269 270.

Appearance

The Heavenly Dao commonly manifests as a white-haired youth. As an incarnation of cosmic order, he radiates an aura of command over Laws and rules rather than conventional spiritual pressure 228 246.

Personality

Before his defeat, the Heavenly Dao was controlling, contemptuous, and convinced that no existence in the Primordial World should exceed its authority. It treated Hongjun as a subordinate, referred to him as “dog,” and viewed the Human Dao's awakening as something to be suppressed rather than tolerated 228 229.

It is also calculating. It exploited Hongjun's guilt over Yang Mei, used the Heavenly Dao Chessboard to search for threats, and later turned Hongjun's ambition against him by granting him the burden of Heavenly Dao authority 170 250 251.

After Zhou Xuan destroyed its avatar, its arrogance gave way to fear and desperation. It sought help from the Great Dao, attempted to buy its life with the Primordial Origin of Heavenly Dao Roulette, accepted humiliation to avoid death, and ultimately became an eager flatterer of Zhou Xuan 247 248 253 255 270.
