Background / History
Xuanzang was born as Jiang Liu'er and rescued from a river by Zen Master Faming, who raised him within Buddhism. He displayed exceptional aptitude from childhood: he could recite one hundred volumes of scripture at five, experienced enlightenment at ten, debated eminent monks at fifteen, and became renowned across the realm by twenty 286.
Before his present life, he was Golden Cicada, Tathagata's second direct disciple. Doubting whether Tathagata's Dharma could truly save all beings, he voluntarily entered mortal reincarnation to experience the seven forms of suffering firsthand 291. By his tenth completed life, he had been reincarnated as Master Xuanzang of Pure Land Temple in Luoyang, Buddhism's designated pilgrim for the Journey to the West 284.
Guanyin's conduct and Sun Wukong's revelation of his true identity shatter Xuanzang's faith in Spirit Mountain. Wukong brings him to Lingxuan Dao Field, where Xuanzang abandons his former destiny and is accepted as Zhou Xuan's third disciple 291 294.
Zhou Xuan bestows the name San Zang, defining it as three burials: the Heaven Dao's indifference, the Saint Dao's injustice, and the malevolence of gods and Buddhas. Xuanzang adopts the title and vows to oppose the existing heavenly order 294. In the Primordial Book Library, he reads Journey to the West, witnesses a vision of his predestined pilgrimage, and sees the human fortune accumulated through his ten lives appropriated by Spirit Mountain. He rejects that fate and chooses to forge his own path 296.
Appearance
Xuanzang is described as a handsome, clear-browed monk with an exceptional bearing. He typically presents himself in monk's robes and the Brocade Kasaya, maintaining the outward appearance of a composed Buddhist master even when acting against Buddhist interests 312 318.
- Wears the Brocade Kasaya bestowed for the pilgrimage. 284 318
- Carries a Nine-Ringed Monk's Staff. 284
- Often travels mounted on a transformed disciple or spiritual beast, including the Tiger with Fiery Eyes and White Brow, Ao Lie, and the Iron-Eating Beast. 312 318
Personality
Xuanzang is defined by a calm but uncompromising resolve. After learning the truth behind his reincarnations and Spirit Mountain's plans, he rejects the role assigned to him and commits himself to becoming the “Strongest True Buddha” on his own terms 296 298.
He is also calculating and opportunistic. He leverages Buddhist obligations to obtain spells and treasures from Guanyin, extracts resources from powerful figures such as Great Sun Tathagata and Grand Supreme Elder Lord, and routinely converts acquired treasures into Experience Points for rapid advancement 303 345 401.
Despite frequently speaking of compassion and “transcendence,” Xuanzang is ruthless toward enemies. He kills demons, corrupt monks, and hostile Buddhist figures without hesitation, conceals evidence when necessary, and subjugates followers through Soul Control Pills 321 353 354. His resolve does not extend to passive obedience: he resists the Four Saints' temptations and refuses to let Buddhism dictate his Dao Heart 360 361.

Story Role / Major Arcs
Becoming the Buddha-Defying Pilgrim
Xuanzang accepts the role of Pilgrim only after reshaping its purpose. Rather than retrieving scriptures for Buddhism's prosperity, he announces that he will destroy false Buddhas and break Spirit Mountain 298 305.
Early Westward Journey
Xuanzang subdues the Tiger with Fiery Eyes and White Brow, accepts the Six-Eared Macaque as a disciple, and acquires Ao Lie as his steed. These encounters establish his practice of using altered destinies to generate Experience Points 306 310 318.
At Guanyin Monastery and Black Wind Mountain, he responds to attempted murder and theft with overwhelming violence. He kills the hostile monks, infiltrates Black Wind Cave through deception, and eliminates the Black Bear Demon and its forces 321 323 324.
Breaking Buddhism's Control
Xuanzang kills Lingji Bodhisattva and the Yellow Wind Monster, erases the traces with Corpse and Soul Dissolving Water, and uses the resulting rewards to accelerate his cultivation. He then uses Soul Control Pills to ensure the obedience of the Six-Eared Macaque and Little White Dragon 353 354.
When Guanyin questions him over Lingji's disappearance, Xuanzang feigns grief and innocence, leaving her unable to prove his involvement 359.
Zhen Yuanzi Conflict
After stealing all twenty-two Ginseng Fruits, Xuanzang draws the wrath of Zhen Yuanzi. Captured with his disciples in Sleeve Universe, he later deploys the Quasi-Saint Peak Experience Card and temporarily takes on Ancestor Styx's power to force Zhen Yuanzi into retreat 365 368 371 373.
Building an Independent Power
Xuanzang recruits Kui Mulang as a loyal subordinate and later receives the Shangqing Realm from Zhou Xuan. He sees the self-contained world as a base through which he can gather talent and build a force independent of Spirit Mountain 376 403.
