Background / History

Kaido was born into the Oni Tribe on Onigashima. After Shimotsuki Ryuma exterminated nearly all of the island’s Oni inhabitants, he spared Kaido because he was not yet three years old. Left alone among Onigashima’s dangerous beasts, Kaido survived through the Oni Tribe’s extreme vitality and became strong enough that no creature on the island could threaten him by the age of twelve or thirteen. He then fled Wano by raft rather than invade it, having been traumatized by Ryuma’s overwhelming power. 242 243

After spending roughly twenty years at sea and becoming one of the world’s strongest fighters, Kaido returned to Onigashima. He allied with the similarly resentful Kurozumi Orochi and began pursuing revenge against Wano Country. His childhood isolation, later discrimination, and abuse by the World Government contributed to his belief that humans and the Oni Tribe could not coexist. 243

During the Rocks era, Kaido was still an apprentice and owed Charlotte Linlin for protecting him when he was weak. In repayment, he supported Katakuri and Linlin’s other children amid the dangerous environment aboard Rocks’ ship. Katakuri remembered this protection long afterward and adopted Kaido’s spiked rings as part of his own appearance. 133

Appearance

Kaido possesses an enormous, heavily built body and vertical pupils that become especially prominent when his killing intent rises. His Mythical Zoan grants him a colossal Azure Dragon form and a powerful human-beast hybrid form. 241 245

  • Can transform into a massive Azure Dragon capable of cloud-riding flight. 241
  • Uses a stronger human-beast form in serious combat. 244 262
  • His dragon form is so large that it can distort estimates of his vitality and Haki reserves. 242
  • Carries a pitch-black spiked club as his primary weapon. 241

Personality

Kaido is violent, prideful, and accustomed to solving problems through personal strength. He habitually uses sneak attacks, including launching Thunder Bagua immediately after shifting from dragon to human form. His impatience becomes especially evident in prolonged battles where opponents evade him and force him to expend Haki inefficiently. 133 241 244

His hatred of Wano’s samurai and humanity stems from the destruction of his clan, his isolated childhood, and later mistreatment. This worldview shaped his brutal upbringing of Yamato, whom he beat for rejecting his beliefs and identifying more closely with humans. 243 246

Despite this brutality, Kaido is capable of loyalty and respect. He protected Linlin’s children to repay her past kindness, reacted urgently to King’s capture, and acknowledged Katakuri’s growth as that of an equal. 133 241 264

Abilities & Skills

Fish-Fish Fruit, Mythical Zoan: Azure Dragon Form

Kaido’s Devil Fruit grants transformations that enhance his already extraordinary physique, mobility, and endurance. Its Azure Dragon form allows him to dominate land, sea, and air. 133 241 243

  • Transforms into an Azure Dragon that can fly by riding clouds. 241
  • Can shift into a human-beast form, described as his strongest transformation. 244 262
  • Uses Bolo Breath, a massive fire attack capable of nearly melting rock. 250
  • Entered the sea in dragon form without apparent impairment; Mousse speculates that this may be a form-specific property of the fruit. 262
  • His dragon transformation provides an additional enhancement to his Oni physiology. 243

Monstrous Vitality and Regeneration

Kaido’s body is defined by immense stamina, durability, and rapid Haki recovery. Even severe injuries that would cripple ordinary fighters can heal completely. 242 245 252

  • Possesses greater vitality and faster Haki recovery than Katakuri. 242 252
  • Continued fighting while seriously wounded by Oden and regenerated during the battle. 252
  • Survived catastrophic damage to his ribs, spine, and internal organs after Katakuri’s halberd strike. 245
  • Katakuri’s earlier wound permanently weakened the defense of Kaido’s dragon scales, enabling Oden to cut deeper. 251
  • His resilience is significantly reduced when his Azure Dragon Fruit is nullified. 359

Haki

Kaido possesses immense Haki reserves and can infuse attacks with Conqueror’s Haki. His Observation Haki is competent enough to sense surveillance and imitate advanced future-sight techniques, though he lacks Katakuri’s precision and composure. 242 251 263

  • Builds up excess Haki in dragon form, then releases it explosively when returning to human form. 86 251 262
  • Uses Conqueror’s Haki-infused attacks with tremendous destructive force. 251 264
  • Can imitate Katakuri’s advanced Observation Haki, but his predictable movement and lesser experience leave openings. 263
  • Relies on large-area attacks to compensate for lower accuracy, consuming more Haki than Katakuri’s precise counters. 264

Thunder Bagua and Drunken Techniques

Kaido’s spiked-club techniques combine his physical power, transformation-based Haki burst, and Conqueror’s Haki infusion. 241 244

  • Thunder Bagua — A sudden, devastating club strike often delivered immediately after transforming from dragon to human form. 241 251
  • Drunken Dragon Eight Trigrams — Kaido’s trump card; it sent Katakuri flying after a prolonged battle of attrition. 244
  • Drunken Thunder: Naraka Pull — A wide-area Conqueror’s Haki attack intended to make evasion difficult. 264
  • Khanda-Nalaka — A Conqueror’s Haki-infused attack with a wide striking area. 244

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Spiked club — Kaido’s primary weapon, used for Thunder Bagua and his other Haki-infused strikes. 241 251
  • Sake gourd — Frequently carried while drinking; Kaido often turns to alcohol after setbacks. 241 341

Relationships

  • Charlotte Linlin — Former benefactor who protected Kaido during his weaker years; Kaido later repaid her by protecting her children aboard Rocks’ ship. 133
  • Charlotte Katakuri — Formerly protected by Kaido as a child; later becomes Kaido’s rival and an opponent Kaido recognizes as his equal. 133 241 264
  • Yamato — His daughter. Kaido subjected her to brutal training and abuse because she rejected his beliefs; her escape after his defeat by Mousse dealt him another severe blow. 243 246 341
  • King — Kaido’s chief subordinate. King’s capture by Mousse and Katakuri provokes Kaido into confronting them directly. 238 241
  • Queen — A core Beasts Pirates officer valued for his research ability; Kaido is enraged when Mousse offers Queen’s corpse rather than return him. 252 263
  • Kurozumi Orochi — Ally in Kaido’s return to Wano and campaign against the country. 243
  • Oden Kozuki — Wano’s leading opponent. Oden inflicts devastating wounds on Kaido and exploits the lasting flaw in his dragon-scale defenses. 250 251 252
  • Charlotte Mousse — Persistent adversary whose schemes weaken the Beasts Pirates, protect Yamato’s escape, and eventually leave Kaido psychologically shaken after an effortless defeat. 245 249 341
  • Whitebeard — Challenged Kaido to a personal duel but could not kill him; Kaido eventually fled the battle and gained his “Strongest Creature” reputation. 264 265
  • Momonosuke — Final killer. Momonosuke beheads Kaido after Blackbeard strips away his Azure Dragon ability and prevents his escape. 359

Story Role / Major Arcs

Conflict with Katakuri in Wano

After King is captured, Kaido flies from Onigashima to confront Katakuri and Mousse. He ambushes Katakuri with Thunder Bagua, but Katakuri’s advanced Observation Haki allows him to evade and counterattack. Their battle develops into a clash between Kaido’s superior endurance and Katakuri’s precision. 241 244

Kaido ultimately uses Drunken Dragon Eight Trigrams and severely injures Katakuri. Katakuri, acting to protect Mousse, strikes Kaido with the Demon Halberd; the resulting slash breaks ribs, damages Kaido’s spine, and leaves him terrified for the first time in years. 244 245

Battle with Oden

Kaido faces Oden Kozuki and the Nine Red Scabbards in Wano. Oden’s Peach Blossom Ten Fists inflicts deep wounds beneath Kaido’s dragon neck, made worse by the lasting flaw Katakuri had previously created in his defenses. 250 251

Although Oden pushes Kaido to the brink and cuts through scales, flesh, and bone with Enma, Kaido’s recovery and remaining strength allow him to defeat Oden’s retainers and survive the attack. 252

Totto Land Showdown

Kaido later invades Totto Land to demand Queen’s return and seek information on Momonosuke and the Scabbards. He battles Charlotte Linlin, but cannot significantly injure her even after using his transformation-based Haki burst. 262 263

Katakuri joins the conflict and exploits Kaido’s inferior precision, targeting vulnerable joints while conserving Haki. Recognizing that an attrition battle favors Katakuri and that Linlin prevents him from forcing concessions, Kaido retreats to Wano. 263 264

Defeat by Mousse

Kaido causes a disturbance at Mousse’s wedding, only to be defeated instantly by Mousse’s awakened Book-Book Fruit. Mousse combines instant Time Stop, teleportation, and Soul Capture, leaving Kaido unable to react despite his Observation Haki and mobility. 341

Mousse releases him out of consideration for Linlin, but Kaido flees in dragon form and retreats to Onigashima to drink. 341

Death in Wano

The Whitebeard Pirates eventually launch a full assault on Wano. Blackbeard’s awakened Dark Water remotely strips Kaido of the Azure Dragon Fruit, depriving him of both a major physical enhancement and his ability to flee by air. 359

With Marco and Jozu preventing his escape, Momonosuke delivers the final blow and beheads Kaido. Kaido’s last reflexive club strike kills one of Momonosuke’s chief retainers, but the Great Pirate dies from the decapitation. 359
