Background / History
Ao Guang accompanied Candle Dragon when the Dragon Race sought to join the Human Race. After Su Mu accepted their request, Candle Dragon instructed the Four Seas Dragon Kings to select talented, upright young dragons for training in the Human Race’s ancestral land 13 14.
When Candle Dragon left to become the Human Dao Hall’s Temple Guardian Divine Dragon, he entrusted protection of the Four Seas Dragon Race to Ao Guang and the other three kings. Ao Guang pledged to uphold the dragons’ duty as humanity’s guardian divine beasts; Su Mu, in turn, promised help from the Human Ancestral Land if the clan faced an insurmountable problem 52.
Ao Guang later confronted Li Jing when Li Jing brought an army to the East Sea, believing his son Nezha had been captured. Ao Guang had been cultivating in seclusion and knew nothing of Nezha’s visit. He contacted his son Ao Bing, who brought Nezha out and cleared up the misunderstanding. Ao Guang then asked Li Jing to withdraw his troops 67 68.
During the campaign against Xiqi, Ao Guang surveyed the terrain with eight Phoenix Race kings and supported Su Mu’s plan to use reinforcements from the Human Ancestral Land against Quasi-Saint opponents 114 117. By the time Sun Wukong visited the Crystal Palace, Ao Guang had passed the East Sea Dragon King position to his eldest prince and devoted himself to cultivation as a Dragon Emperor 161.
Abilities & Skills
Water techniques
- Ao Guang summoned a vast sea to shield Sun Wukong from a black-robed attacker’s palm strike 368.
- His Myriad Water Void Seal gathers seawater into blue dragons and walls to compress and seal a region of space. A Sub-Saint opponent judged that, if completed, the seal would be difficult to break quickly 369.
Dragon form
- Ao Guang can assume a colossal dragon form described as a hundred thousand feet long. He used it to encircle and attack the black-robed opponent, though the opponent repeatedly evaded his claws 369.
Relationships
- Candle Dragon — Dragon Race ancestor who entrusted Ao Guang and the other kings with protecting the Four Seas and maintaining their commitment to humanity 52.
- Su Mu — Accepted the Dragon Race as humanity’s guardians, supplied Ao Guang with cultivation resources, and later summoned him to aid Sun Wukong 13 52 112 367.
- Ao Bing — His son and the Third Prince of the East Sea Dragon Palace; Ao Bing’s invitation to Nezha prompted Ao Guang’s confrontation with Li Jing 67.
- Li Jing — Faced him during the misunderstanding over Nezha; the confrontation ended after Ao Bing brought Nezha forward 67 68.
- Sun Wukong — Fought beside him against a black-robed attacker after Su Mu called for reinforcements 367 368 369.
Trivia
- A later East Sea Dragon King is also named Ao Guang. The former king had passed his title to his eldest prince by Chapter 161; the Ao Guang who receives Sun Wukong at the Crystal Palace refers to Dragon Emperor Ao Guang as his father. Their actions during the Crystal Palace weapon dispute should therefore not be attributed to the former king 161 162.
