Background

Sun Wukong emerged from a stone crevice on Flower Fruit Mountain and led the monkeys into the Water Curtain Cave. They made him their Great King, while Snow Lotus proposed the title “Handsome Monkey King.” He appointed Marshal Ma and General Tong to train the mountain's monkey soldiers. 149 150

After his grandfather died, Wukong resolved to seek immortality. Guided by a woodcutter, he reached Green Lotus Cave Heaven and waited outside Subhuti's gate for more than a year, enduring snow and exhaustion until Subhuti accepted him. 154 156

Subhuti gave him the surname Sun and the given name Wukong, then privately taught him methods of immortality and movement. Wukong's pride in his rapid progress eventually led him to demonstrate his transformations before his senior brothers; Subhuti rebuked him and sent him back to Flower Fruit Mountain. 157 159
